Best of all worlds on the server front as far as I'm concerned; Poweredges with Opterons! The last server I bought was a Proliant DL385, and that was purely because Dell weren't offering an Opteron in the same segment (2U 2-Way rackmount).
looks like dell have REALLY been taking it from behind in the server arena - lord knows nobody wants xeon right now in my line of work
I've been pounding the Opteron thing at both our account manager and the somewhat more senior chap who came out to visit us recently; I think they're getting the point that they're actually losing sales in the server space to Opteron-based machines. Good lord, I remember a thread on this from November...

They should have either done this years ago or not at all. With the Core based CPU's just around the corner they'd do well sticking to Intel and keeping those big discounts for being exclusively intel.
End result: They have lost their discounts for the future, and lost shedloads of revenue/profit over the past couple of years by only selling slow, expensive processor bease systems.

Hell just froze over. About time though. I think people should have choice in processors and management decisions can lock organizations into a fixed supplier (i.e. Dell) expecially if they want good deals on stand desktops/laptops. I wonder what effect the AMD lawsuit had on this decsion. Well, whaterver the reasons it's good to see some fair competion going on.

Woodcrest and Conroe really remove the NEED to move to AMD - except on many-socketed boxes, where intel can't compete
I think dell know that. The only time Opterons seem to be mentioned is with regards to 4 way and above servers.
note: dell used to resell SGI kit for many-socket boxes. SGI are now history
It's worth noting that the biggest box Dell currently ship aside from their blades is a (memory strangled) 4-way Xeon. Opterons would give them a scalability that they don't currently possess.
