    PS3 will include the PS2 chipset

    No emulator in the first PS3 model.

    Didn't the PS2 do this by using the Playstation CPU as the I/O processor?

    Yes it did, its because Sony own the technology, and its a better way of providing backward compatability other than emulation.

    Initial software emulation is too slow then?

    At a guess - not finished - much like the rest of the PS3. It's probably easier to drop in the PS2 chipset at this late stage.

    Hmmm - I'd have thought integration of another chipset and combining with another system would have been more work than optimising an emulators code.... unless the cpu isn't fast enough for the task?

    Dropping a chip in is actually pretty easy work compared to writing a good emulator

    Especially if the CPU is radically different (which cell is apparently) too..
    Honestly i think the backwards compat. stuff on consoles is a waste of time - it's a marketing tool at best!

    Sorry, I totally disagree. There are still plenty of PS1 games that I play on my PS2. Plus, a lot of 'retro' games appear to be coming back into favour. Look at all these retro games that are being released.

    I think backwards compatibility now is more important than it's ever been.

    Well each to his own Still, i'd be surprised if it's a major factor for people when buying a console - i think it's the new 'latest and greatest' game that makes console sales.
    Playing old games makes me think 'oh, it looks quite naff now'

    indeed, i still play many of my PS1 games on my PS2, and one of the majour reasons i will be buying the PS3 is so i can still play FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, ace combat, ect.

    it will have PS1 compatability right?

    and is there any news on if any games will be incompatable with the PS3? such as any games you had to change disk for (MGS:SM *sob*) was incompatable with the PS2?

    ultra magnus you surley have at present a ps2 so i would think that being able to play your current games on another system would not be a major concern. Its not like you'll be able to re-sell it after the ps3 comes out
    AMD3000+ ATIX800XL + GBNF44x mobo.. all at stock because they're good enough atm + CA A1 amp-->Mission 73S Loigtech MX1000 + 1GB ram + 1/3 TB HD array
    Wintendo XP + Linux (when it works) .. just incase you were wondering
