Yes it maybe huge, but at least its built into the PS3 unlike the 2 box system of the 360.Originally Posted by Steven W

of course its a custom cooling solution - its not going to use a stock AMD cpu fan is it![]()

Having an external PSU is a much wiser move in my opinion. Not only can the main hardware run cooler, but any power problems which can and do happen can be resolved easily.
yeah i agree that any power problems would be easily dealt with using an external psu and also allows them free up space inside the console
Ah but aren't we're supposed to be heading towards the 'one box to rule them all' mentality. That doesn't work so well if you have to have another box providing the power for your one box.
Yep, a wise move by MS and a poor decision by sony in my opinion.Originally Posted by skewed
Anyone know if the cooling solutions for PS3s actually decrease normal ps3 fan noise?
Well, this thread is from before the PS3 came out - it's since been shown to have a rather good built-in cooling system - it doesn't really need a custom solution as the fans aren't too noisy.
The fans in the PS3 are nearly silent compared to the ones my 360, perfect for undisturbed blu ray viewings in my opinion, do you really find them that intrusive? I can't speak for the PS3 but I know several of the extra cooling solutions for the 360 negatively affect air flow and I'd assume the same for the PS3 if I'm honest.
Same here. The 360 fan and drive noise can be a real pain- more noticeable if you have used a near silent PS3 too. The giant power brick with its hard to route cable is also a pain.
I think things like the Nyko coolers (PS3 and 360 versions) actually draw power from the consoles PSU, in addition to hampering airflow.
