I'm sorry but the guy in the article says the ps3 is future proof, since when has technology been futureproof?! from the perspective of a games console its hugely overpriced. But depending how the linux side of things turns out, maybe then it will be good value for money.

Either way i'll stick to my PC thanks

Is it me or does the whole PS3 fiasco just go from bad to worse day by day?

The 360 is going to look a positive bargain by the time Sony's white elephant arrives - half the price and with far better looking (i.e. more mature) games to boot!

how is it Sony that are gambling, when it's the consumers who need to put down large sums of cash for "potential"?

Indeed, what happens if HD-DVD becomes the standard? Me thinks microsoft were sensible to not include the HD-DVD as standard.

Exactly and I think this is (one of)sony's problem(s). They seem to see the PS3 as more of an all-rounder, an entertainment unit in a box that will do everything for you - dvd, cd, divx, games, internet etc etc. Most people will not see it like this though - they will see it as a games console, and for a games console it's MASSIVLY overpriced. Even more so when you consider the main market that the PS2 hit - the chav.

This console is geared to a different market than the PS2, for the PS3 you will need to have a lot of money (which most people won't have for a console), the style of the thing shows you that much even if you ignore the price.

As a home entertainment system, well that depends on which standard comes out on top. If blu-ray wins then yes, sony are right and it is future proofed - especially when you consider the price of blu-ray stand alone players..but I'm not convinced that blu-ray will win...
As a games console it is *NOT* future proof. Sure I'm sure it will be fun to play for years to come - hell I still enjoy playing on my N64 and my mates old SNES - but technology wise it will be out of date the second it rolls off the production line.

Well not quite that quick but yeah you can never futureproof any kind of computer, be it a console or a PC. I remember sony saying how the PS2 was "futureproofed" because it had USB ports you could plug cameras and stuff into . The thing I've found you can use those things for on the PS2 is for the EyeToy and maybe some crappy kareokey (sp? I know really bad) mic.

I'll get a PS3, but it's horribly overpriced so it's gonna have to wait a while, sony don't seem to realise, when we buy a games console, we want a games console, not some crappy attempt at a PC. Ok so I can understand the DVD playback function of the xbox and PS2, the CD format was getting way too small so DVD was the next logical step, since the DVD drive was already in there, then you may as well stick in a playback function.

Sony have stuck in a BR drive, not so games could have more space, not so you could play back BR, to try and put BR on top of HD-DVD. How many of you bought a DVD player when it first came out? I'm guessing not very many of joe public did, since they were very, very expensive. Sony are forcing this brand new technology (which usually only enthusiasts would buy initially) on people who buy a PS3 in attempt for thier media to beat HD-DVD, pushing up the price.

I do know some people who've pre-ordered one, and I want to give him a slap (hes an ignorant rich kid).

That's one reason why I am getting a Wii on launch, and not a 360 or ps3. I want a games console - for gaming and thats about it. If I want a PC i have one, if I want a dvd player I have one...all in one solutions are never as good as separates anyway are they

the ps2, to many, was a cheap dvd player. in Japan, the most popular software title sold with the PS2 on launch day was The Matrix on DVD - which outsold any games, in bundles bought by punters.

I knew a guy who bought the Xbox 1 for over £400 too when it was launched. And the PS2 was probably similarly priced on launch with top end features. Prices will drop, as said, this is for people who are PS3 hardcore fans, or people with too much money - early adopters. In a year they'll be £300 and I'll get one. Or maybe not, depends on games, how features turn out, etc.

Lol, like people who buy a current edition Blu-Ray DVD player only to find out it's single layer only, and most decent DVD's in the future will be dual layer for highest quality content (ie 50GB vs 25GB space for better video). Anyone with any sense would wait for the dust to settle on all this stuff.
