    Optimus has landed

No, not Optimus Prime the arse kicking transformer, but the mini-three variant of the OLED keyboard is reportedly shipping. As much as I'd love three keys with OLED screens on them, I'll hold out for a fully fledged keyboard.
According to the Art.Lebedev web site, the miniature programmable keypad is now shipping, and customers should receive them by mid-August in the U.S.

The price is 3,395 rubles, about $126 or 121 euros, until August 1. At that time, the studio will begin charging $160 per keypad.

    More than meets the eye?

(Why am I not surprised of the album chosen on the iTunes button demo )

Dish them out for £25 and I'd buy one for displaying email notifications, caller ids (e.g. http://www.mattcollinge.co.uk/2006/0...ac-rss-feeds/), and stuff like that. Anything that would normally appear on my desktop but can't when I'm playing a game.

I hear the drivers and everything are going to open-sourced so that's a plus point. Roll on the keyboard, but that ain't gonna come cheap!

Each OLED key on the mini three will operate for 5,000 hours and will include a screen-saving mode to save power and extend the life of the keys.
Effectively, if one were to keep it on 24/7, that would mean they'd last just under 210 days. Considering some of us have our PCs on 15 hours a day plus, then are we to believe this, and the Optimus Keyboard, will last only around 1 year.

The screensaving mode would help there, I guess...

Nice idea on paper, but I'm not convinced of the lifespan just yet. Would love to have one of the full keyboards, but doubt I could really justify it, epsecially if the mini variant is about £80.

True David, but still, I doubt any such feature would improve it that greatly, and I would imagine that the 5000 hours approximation includes the effects of that power saving.

I really dont see the point in these at all, its just an expensive gadget that you would only use once.

OLED technology is still developing. Maybe they'll be able to get some better polymers in a year or so that last 20-50k hours. I hope so, they are going to start selling OLED TV's soon.
