HD movie downloads on the Xbox 360?

RUMOUR! It's been suggested before that Microsoft were looking to move into the area of movie downloads on the Xbox 360, but these rumours are now gathering more pace.

The rental idea is rather good, similar to the on-demand stuff available on various cable/satellite packages at the moment, but I'm not sure how successful purchasing would be. Sure, the hypothesised prices are much cheaper than what oen would pay for an HD-DVD/Blu-ray copy, but the lack of special features (I assume) and the pure fact that you can only watch it on the 360 would put me off. I usually buy DVDs I want to see - I would much rather pay 10 quid to have a DVD for ever, and enjoy everything it has to offfer, than pay 3.50 to have it for only one night. Thus I frequent the three-for-twenty/thirty quid sections at HMV, Virgin etc.

Making the forthcoming 360 HD-DVD drive a burner as well, and concocting some fancy DRM to let you burn a limited number of copies, now there you would be talking. Sadly I doubt something like this could ever happen

Good idea, not sure how most people will feel waiting for HD video on a 2meg connection.

Yeah the question has to be asked - how are people going to be able to download these, and at what quality will they be encoded?

at a basic 720p a film will still be nearing 10gig, and for a full blown 1080p movie you are talking aroung 16gig...thats over most peoples bandwidth allowance in just 1 movie!

16 meg for a movie? Never downloaded one, but if that's the case then why would anyone be interested in downloading movies on the Xbox 360 if they could only have a maximum of 6?

100 GB Hard drive - yep that was a fake, but it still strongly rumoured to be making an appearance next year.

perhaps microsoft are planning something bigger than a 100gb hdd...
there again, the price would be silly...

maybe you will be able to download them onto your pc, all drm'ed or whateva u call it and you'll be able to stream them across to your xbox. who knows!!
