Are they using an OLED display? I don't understand how you'd get almost double battery life and 40% brightness increase... unless the battery life is with the screen off 99% of the time.

Apple doesn't give any explanation I can find but I agree that increased battery life and brighter screens don't seem to be naturally bed fellows - and that was why a made a bit of a deal with this in the story about the new video iPod.
