the only thing stopping me from ordering an AM2 3800+ on a 590SLI board over a 6600 is the uncertainty over whether i would be able to swap it out in favour of a K8L in a years time.
OK, for once the hype appears justified - I'd have to agree that PhysX is probably toast as soon as quad core becomes more widespread. As the developer said, they can just throw a whole core at the physics; who needs a card?

I have to say that I think the PhysX card is an independent form was toast before it made it out of the creator's head. But it might still have potential as an extra chip on a graphics card or a motherboard or something like that.

a CPU was always used for pshyics so its easy to now when you have 4 cores to decitcate one whole one just for physics. But i promise you this Physx cards will be able to offer more powerfull physics becouse they dont have general processing in mind they are all about physics.
Just look back when first GPU was relased, everyone said CPU can do the same now we cant live withouth it.
personally i dont want to p[lay games that look like that lol, they look to real its boring imo, iknow its a minority opinion. but i assoiciate games not looking like rl and i like that. otherwise i would recreate counter strike with my mates in real life or something.
Yep, but the things is, A PhysX chip isn't a physics accelerator, at least that's what we found when we tested one.
All it does is add more physics to a game, more particles etc etc.
Havok FX does something similar but uses GPU downtime, or an entire GPU, to do the work... and as there's minimal data transfer from the GPU-physics before the effects are rendered, the process is far quicker (which is what was causing the performance drop with a PhysX card).
I don't see how a dedicated PPU will ever be more powerful than having a core dedicated to physics... even given a PPU's possible dedicated architecture, a core running the physics is always going to be running at a higher clock speed and have more efficient pathways to other hardware in the machine, such as memory, other cores, the GPUs etc.
I'm guessing that one core of the core 2 quadro even at a 'modest' 2.66ghz can easily push the same calcs as the phsysX.
Im impressed, I have too much sunlight on my room at the mo, so I couldn't really appreciate it as much (I will watch later tonight :P) But the sheer vastness of the surroundings is awesome.
Clunk, I also noticed that jerkiness, I'm pretty sure you are gonna need top of the line stuff to run that on full details XD
One word, WOW talk about lush, that Physx card would seem useless, owuld have been nice to see it clocked down to a single core and dual core to show the actual difference, but WOW
