Im going to take back what i said about maxtor's rma process being good. Today i received my replacement drive and to say its ropey looking is an understatement.

    The lid is dented.

The main black casing has had scratches coloured in with a marker pen (not all of them though).

The whole drive is dirty and definately hasnt been refurbed, unless they dont bother to clean them when they refurb them.

Dust and dirt in the bottom of the SATA and poer socket area.

pretty shoddy, itll be going back at their expense. Amateurs.

so who's left? Seagate, WD, Hitachi (previously IBM) and Samsung?

I have a 3 year old Samsung IDE drive and never had any problems with it, and my backup drives a healthy Seagate.

    '<' = ate
    Seagate<Maxtor<Quantum
    Fujitsu quit the desktop market
    Hitachi<IBM

Toshiba are there, but with laptop drives and other small form factor stuff..
Fujitsu are only doing enterprise and laptop stuff as well..

Nobody else left iirc (discounting microdrive manufacturers).

im sad to see maxtor go, they offered good value on their diamondmax drives ive got two 160gb diamondmax 9's in raid stuffed into silentmaxx enclosures - they've been churning away without a hiccup for a couple of years now

the only other drives ive had before that were ibm and they were terrible! mind you they were the original deathstar drives
