NVIDIA releases first WHQL-certified Microsoft Vista GPU drivers

NVIDIA, the worldwide leader in programmable graphics processor technologies, announces that its first publicly available Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) graphics driver is currently ready and available for download for Windows Vista. NVIDIA offers these certified drivers for the industry’s broadest range of graphics processing units (GPUs), supporting over 100 different products.

    Its not.
I won’t move to Vista until at least SP1. The reasons for this are two fold.

    1) There are going to be major bug's in Vista on release (like any OS). Ill let someone else find and fix them.

    2) Driver support for Vista is utterly dire at the moment - and we are on RC2 !. I cant see manufactures improving them overnight, so even when more do get released, im sure they will have issues that will need resolving too.

Its nice to see Nvidia on the ball though. Ill boot into RC2 64bit later and see if the new drivers want to play nice. So far, ive only had luck with the 32bit release.

Very relevant. It might entice me back to running RC2.

The previous nvidia Vista drivers failed to set the fans on my 7900GX2 correctly, making my box noticeably noisier than under XP.

If I'd not bought an X1900XT recently, it would have been very relevant for my 7800GT!

ATI driver could still do with some work, but at least it shows some companies are getting their butts in gear for the launch in a few weeks.

    /me cries 'cause I can't play Doom3/Quake4 yet.

The previous Nvidia drivers were working fine for me, it was the soundcard, Realtek wireless NIC and Imon that were playing up. I might have another crack at it this week.

    WTF? I didn't know this.

    See you later Vista.

Does MS not understand that their single biggest advantage over Linux and OSX is hardware support?

As it says in the driver release notes, they are not performance drivers, just solid enough to let you use RC2 at a decent level.

Not very decent if you have shelled out for 2 expensive cards though. I can honestly see the drivers issue dragging on far into next year, long after Vista is officially released.

It's beta software, if you want massive framerates use XP. I reckon nvidia will be busting their balls to get a decent well performing set of drivers out in time for the release.

Nvidia got RC2 the same time as the rest of us, didn't do too badly considering they only had a few days to work with.

Love how nV have their WHQL drivers out first. Smacks of irony given the horrific driver issues of their previous Vista drivers.

Performance isn't really going to matter all that much at the moment. It's not going to push Vista sales where it matters, and it's not likely to drive competition with ATi either, as no-one really knows how things will settle in the next few months. Those that don't know much won't care, and those who do know their stuff are canny enough to sit back and wait before purchasing one way or the other anyway.

As said above, it's the sound drivers and more obscure devices that are giving more cause for concern.
