I've always liked Mac's designs (particularly the Mac Books) but I've always found this style of case to be pretty fugly and seemingly at odds with their usual high standards of aesthetics. Perhaps it's just me..?

3 weeks until mine arrives..with an 8800GT inside it..i'm counting the seconds lol

Just wish they stocked these with the 8800GT already inside it at the stores, to save having to get BTO

Or you wait until our next piece when you can get an 8800GT in your MacPro for less than the price Apple pay - a quieter card and no compromise!

thats interesting david, got another day or so before apple finish messing around creating our account..i'm intrieged! Its costing £112 to get the 8800GT in my new mac (business discount + no vat) so if its less than or comparable to that i'd be able to pick one up at the end of the week

Well - how much can you buy an 8800GT for on it's own

.... basically we are looking at the fact it costs from £200 to £250 (apple 8800 upgrade - Google Product Search) for an Apple 8800GT or you pickup an 8800GT off eBay for under £100

    ah ok

Yeah it costs a fortune to upgrade after purchase, crazy prices, but if you order with the system its only £130 off the standard apple store, which isnt bad at all compared to their usual pricing.

Still interested to see how you do it though.

Yep and you end up with a 2600XT which you can sell on eBay since old Mac Pro users can upgrade their MacPros with it from a 7300GS....

... It should work out to cost around 50 quid.

Re: Apple Mac Pro: the ultimate workstation - upgraded

iirc it was fairly simple to flash the card bios over, the the trick is the the bios code is apple copyright, and therefore illegal to flash a non mac card to a mac card..

    Or something..

It is a question of an EFI supporting BIOS which can sit on a 128K rom - the challenge is all cards since November 2007 have been 64K - the actual BIOS is around 68K so you need the larger rom...

... luckily we have a card which is exactly that and we are trying to work out a pattern....

The cable which you need can be simply ordered - costs £14....

... and we will show you where it plugs in etc.

Could've fooled me, looks more like a headphone socket!
