I believe the Gadget Show (channel 5 7:15 tonight) has an undercover report on this sort of thing this week. Pretty sure PC world is on there if last weeks preview for this weeks show is anything to go by. Will be interesting to see what they say.
My feelings towards PC world are too strong to comment on in here but even from the start of my interest in computers I knew what sort of company they were/are. The most expensive thing I've bought from there is a £50 chair. Getting the message through to my mates to not buy there has been difficult. Just last week my mate bought a PC from there and took it back the same day because it wasn't right...He left with a refund.
Comet on the other hand is a different experience. They do have staff that are trained or have a natural interest. I'm not saying their outstanding but you can have a technical conversation with them, at least in my local branch.

Having worked for DSG for a number of years before getting out, I can tell you that new staff are trained to "sell" and the emphasis on product knowledge is quite frankly, shocking. The managers are targetted on PC repairs as an element of bonus, so DSG are asking for problems by financially motivating managers in such a way.
It surprises me very little that they are under close scrutiny once more. If it wasn't for their european acquisitions, that company would have gone out of business a few years ago. As it happens, I think the next three years might be telling for their UK operation, The Link gone, Dixons trading online... It might not stop there...
£350 ? eeek...new pc costs less.
...even from PCW..
Jon - couldn't agree more! Was it really any different with us at the link? 'Sell Sell Sell' !!!
Complaint? Yeah i'll send your phone off to mastercare *muffled laugh*
I was going to work for PCWorld (considered it while at the Link) but didn't for these exact reasons, I knew i'd know 100x more than anyone else but that doesn't matter, it's who can sell the old lady a C2D rig with an 8800gtx for internet browsing that get the praise/money/recognition!
I've often thought about taking my main rig into PCWorld for one of their 'PC Health Checks' just so as to see the look on the person's face when they popped off the side - they probably wouldn't even recognise half the stuff inside, & I wouldn't call it particularily heavily modded!
on the plus side pc world do browse your hard drive for private data....
Was how gary glitter was busted the first time. Because he took his dodgy pc into pc world in bristol and they called the police...
I dunno why the fact PC World can't fix pc's would surprise anybody.
The whole retail industry in the UK is exactly the same. Get people in the door to work for as little as possible and get them to sell as much as they can by any means they can.
Training, now that costs dosh so they'll just quietly forget about it.
Now, this is ok in Asda or Tesco where you don't have to know whether bread is compatible with butter but for a technical outlet it's not as simple as that.
