Mobiboo claims big savings for Tesco-exclusive combi WiFi/mobile phone

Mobiboo Mobile is making big claims for the money-saving potential of its tovo-branded combined WiFi/mobile phone, reckoning that mobile-call bills can be cut by 30 per cent and landline costs by 50 per cent.

The company, which describes itself as the UK’s first WiFi mobile VoIP operator, has tied up a deal with Tesco to initially offer the tovo t450g PocketFone for £159.95 in 19 stores as a pay-as-you-go bundle.

looks good, ive been meaning to get a VoIP WiFi phone as i have telewest broadband and would save on a phone line that I never use as I always use my mobile. Seems an attractive price too, I wonder if it will unlock to other network operators?

But it looks like it came from 1998, i suppose style and value are mutually exclusive.

If you visit the tovo site, you'll see that one of the models offered is a flip phone, the t3000 WiFi Mobile, but this is only a WiFi phone, and doesn't (contrary to its name) appear to also have true mobile phone functionality.

I think what we all need to remember is that the t450 is a first-generation product.

As time goes on, and competition increases, style will become important - and be a differentiator on which people base buying decisions.

Some of the latest Nokia busness orentated phones such as the E60 will do VoIP over Wi-Fi. Obvously they work as mobile phones as well, and look a lot nicer. They are considerably more expensive though.

The other down side is that they don't come pre-configured for a VoIP provider, so you would have to organise your own subscription (easy) and figure out the complex settings needed to connect (hard).

    I work for nokia BTW.
