Final Sounds' flat-speaker solution for home cinemas

Dutch outfit Final Sound Solutions reckons it produces the world's lightest and flattest speakers and says that its latest electrostatic flat-panel model, the 300i, is, like its stablemates, especially well suited for discreet use with home cinema systems.

The 48in-high 300i - pitched at a stiff €1,800 (£1,219) per pair - comes with a floor stand but can, optionally, be wall-mounted and readily hidden from view. It's a mere eight inches wide - and just one inch deep - and said to offer a frequency responses of 95Hz to 22kHz (+/- 3 dB).

They may be thin, but if you place these things bang up against the wall you'll have the same (and probably even more) problems with reflections causing uneven frequency response. Rolling off the bass at 120Hz in your amp's bass management will help, and these are obviously designed to be used with a subwoofer. I remember the QUAD Electrostatics needed a massive amount of space behind them to work properly, so the idea that electrostatics don't take up much room is a bit flawed.

I think that Charleski is right about them being intended for use with subwoofers and also suspect that the controls for the sub-woofers may help make them okay to use on a wall.

Stupid thing is that I'd be able to tell you this from having had a good listen if only I'd remembered to get along and hear a dem that was being given on Monday night!

    D'oh!

Got hold of some pics of the rear of the subwoofers so have now added those to the first page of the piece.
