    HEXUS.gaming :: Review - Wii - Nintendo's new console

We carefully un-wrapped our Wii and took it out of its box like a new born baby in a cradle.

Check out the HEXUS.gaming Review for more info.

Is there a way of turning the thing off properly, or do you have to do it at the wall?

And if so, does it loose any settings?

There's a power, eject and reset button on the front. Off isn't actually off (like video standby).

Unplugged Wii and then turned it back on and it says 'country doesn't match that in wii settings'. So had to select country again and it worked...strange.

There is an option in the setup menu of the Nintendo Wii to have it either run on standby, or completely off.

    Other settings are fine.

Oh yeah, if anyone has any comments or wants to write a paragraph or something about their first Wii experience just let me know and I'll add it at the end of the article.

    Great article,

I've had my Wii since Nov 19 (Canada). I find that the nunchuk's cord is a little too short - I've had a few close encounters when I yanked the cord in boxing. The Wiimote also seems prone to scratches - the white doesn't reveal it easily - but under the light its noticible.

Another thing is that the Bluetooth is built into the console - not into the sensor bar as your article suggests. The sensor bar's purpose is to simply send OUT infra-red signals to the Wiimote - which in turn sends data back to the console using bluetooth. Therefore, the sensor bar feels flimsy because it serves a very simple function. People have experimented succesfully with Candles and VCR Remotes - and apparantly you can even build your own with IR transmitters.

Overall the Wii is a great machine and great fun - the console looks great - very sleek. The fact that it can play Gamecube games right out of the box is just a bonus. I'm not entirely sure since I sold my Gamecube a long time ago - but the load times for GC games seem to be faster on the Wii than on the GC? Or it could be just me....

Played it for a long time yesterday. Impressions:

Amazing fun with more than one player. I've only really played Wii Sports and Wii play (Zelda's looks like it'll take a while to get into) but get a friend along to play against you and you just can't stop laughing...or ruining the furniture.

The OS GUI is slick and fast, faster than the 360 OS imo. It's well designed and the Wii Mii's are just fantastic!

Boxing is one game I found that is pretty unresponsive although it's still great fun. I can't wait for some more great games to come out to fully utilise this baby!

One gripe I've found is that the console is pretty lacking on the sound front. OK, it's got the Wii-Mote that puts out sound which is great but I found the music to be pretty appalling...easy listening rubbish and not much filling sound. This doesn't necessarily spoil your enjoyment of the console but it can be irritating!

Overall a great fun and definitely social console that is a "must buy" if you like gaming with your friends and want to get your family in on the action!

We'll add everyone's first impressions of the console as long as it's legible.

The thing is, will it work? Will games adopt and properly use the new controller? Or will it end up being just a gimmick? I was thinking of buying one, but for 250euros its a complete ripoff IMO. From a hardware point of view its crappy value and from an entertainment point of view, its a risky bet.

I think i might enjoy wii for a few hours, maybe days, about after that i will soon get bored with it, especially if no good games come out that effectively use the new controller.

Also you dont mention that it doesnt even play dvd movies. Sure it might not be the end of the world, but it would be really nice if i could get rid of the standalone dvd player and just have a wii in my living room. It would have cost like less than 1euro to nintendo to add dvd movie support, but they didnt.

Early rumours talked about 150-200euros but it ended up costing 250euros? I think nintendo saw how hyped wii became and raised the price. And wii games cost as much as xbox 360 games!!! This was supposed to be a cheap but fun console. And from that prespective, wii fails to deliver. If price drops and cool games come out for it, then i might buy it.
