As much as the porn industry may have affected the VHS/Betamax battle, surely the presence of the internet as a distribution method for hi-def content will make Sony's decision less relevant than it was in the net-free climate back then...

Agree that its all about the old internet nowadays, the hard media is not as important as before but I'd still hate to download, stream or otherwise a full HD movie off the t'internet - too big sunshine.

Well it depends. If they have it chopped into pieces, it makes it much easier. Unless of course you actually want the whole movie so you can watch the "story".

Heh - quite! I forgot about about the type of films we're talking about here - perhaps you only need the first 5 mins then

Won? The war between them hasn't really started yet.
Its still very very early days for a format that will probably last ~20 years?

BR goes up in sales due to PS3. HD-DVD responds by dropping price and giving 5 free HD DVD's.

Its still anyones game at this stage.

Besides, what do you consider to be a 'win'?

A higher percentage of market penetration? (and when, and over what period would you judge these figures on?)
Which format stops selling on the shelves?
    Something else?

One month it seems that HD-DVD is outselling Bluray, the next its inverse. I don't really trust any of the sources around to be honest.

Didn't BlockBuster recently agree to only use BluRay in the US?? Or somewhere?

Sony have done it right with the BluRay in the PS3 - once the bluray + HD media become more available and cheaper, people will start using their PS3 as a Blu-Ray player. Right now the media is not so accessable/cheap (went to Blockbuster yesterday and didn't see ONE HD/BR disc), so people aren't bothered.

Triple layer HD-DVDs = 50Gb and still work on first generation players, I don't think BR disks are capable of more than two layers because of they way they're made. Or at least, an increase in layers on a BR disk would require a new player designed for triple layer.

I can see that this issue won't have such a massive effect that it did with VHS/Betamax, but there's still the point that DVD sales of porn is still a massive industry, and trying to send a HD-DVD/BR rip of a porn DVD down the tubes will be impractical to the majority of people. One, because it will take ages, and two, it would take masses amounts of room on a hard drive.

I think the porn people are happy with internet distribution for now, broadband has made such a impact on the market most are happy to peddle their wares purely internet based.
