3's free overseas roaming sets cat among pigeons again

Mobile phone operator 3 is scrapping roaming fees for UK customers when they travel to the seven other countries in which it operates - Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy and Sweden.

This move follows the company's introduction late last year of a flat-rate (£5 or £10 per month) mobile-internet service - X-Series - with an option to watch TV being streamed over the net by a Slingbox to your phone from a satellite or terrestrial set-top box or a personal video recorder.
    More.

Hopefully, other mobile phone operators will now have to follow 3 Group's lead but will they - or will the European Commission have to force their hands, as usual?

Nice, wish they'd just improve customer service to an acceptable level

This is precisely the reason I got an x-series N73 for my other half. She is off round the world today, Australia being one of the destinations. Found out about this on the phone to their customer service people yesterday. She will get her tarrif as it is at home and can use the internet for MSN and skype

Tell you what - this will be awesome if Vodafone do the same - I've got unlimited free sms/mms so even when abroad I won't have to worry....

European Commission will still hav'em for cross network roaming charging in the other countries.

Great if you are likely visit the 7 other countries. If Vodafone or O2 (aka Telefonica) were to offer this it could get very interesting. Just when cheap flights start get more expensive doh!

Going to make a big difference to Northern Irish customers like myself - given the amount of time some of us spend in the South. Quite happy with my 18 Month Three contract right now -£15/month - 300min/1000text 50 MMS 50 video min £5 downloads (with 600/2000 texts for first 6 months) now discontinued

Bit of a Pity the destination list is hardly the most regular tourist destinations - if it was places like holland, france, spain, america...

hopefully the other operators will follow suit - thats the big difference here.
