    Google Satellite Coverage Extended

    The wonderful Google Maps has been updated to include more satellite imagery.

    This probably has a very good use, but I expect a lot of time will be spent just playing around with bird's-eye views of familar areas. I wonder if we'll find any stealth bombers on UK soil?

    Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm looking for the Queen.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    The data is carefully filtered by the MOD, so nothing to sensitive should apear on the maps or photo's. I know of plenty of military installations that don't appear on any maps.

    Very cool, but not as good as having a copy of Memory Map and loads of map data on your harddrive. I have got all of the UK covered by proper OS maps and sat photo's for all of the UK. You can overlay the photo's onto the map and the software generates a 3D version using the map data. You can fly through the hills on a route you program in and drop the maps on PDA's etc. It's simply amazing, you have to see it in action.

    The best use for sat images is when they are used with proper OS maps for planning walks/hikes. It's not always so obvious on a map for things like water, forests etc. It's a pain when your carefully planned route turns out to have things you can't pass through/over.

    Also handy when buying a house or planning a new one, so you can see whats really in the area and what the estate agent 'forgot' to mention.

    They will probably be usefull for terrorists/criminals too, for planning the best way to break into a garden, royal palace, industrial park, school etc. While I think it's great, i'm sure a lot of people will be thinking that google have opened a very large can of worms here.

    What a load of rubbish, the resolution is far too low to of any more use than any commonly available map of the area.

    That sort of data is easily available from most Librarys already.

    Personally I look forward to when Google get high res, realtime images, like CTU have.

    Why thanks.

    However, you miss my point. I have not looked at many images on Google, but on the Memory Map ones I have you can see enough. You can tell where gates are, you can see thet type of buildings (not just a little symbol etc). You can see fields surrounding, you can see if they have big walls or hedges, You can make out routes accross rooftops. I am not talking about super fine detail, like seeing window locks!

    For example, If I was going to rob a bank it would be a very useful tool for planning my entry/exit.

    And what if i wanted to go and mortor an RAF base or something like the IRA did. Would be much much more usefull than a map.

    Or spotting a good vantage point for a sniper attack on a politition. You see maps, even OS, don't usually show the exact dimentions of buildings, just a symbol for the type of building like a church.

    Or mabye a country house etc. It's not hard Stoo. Engage brian dude. No need to be so rude, and I was only saying. Just making small talk. Not a major point, but valid.

    All i was doing was pointing out a few uses, the the orginal poster said they could not think of any. I have lived by OS maps for years and lead many groups over mountains many times and I have found sat images very very useful as a planning back up.

    Anyway, I think it great that we should have fee access to this data. I can't beliive some companies get a away will selling them you us at high cost. Most are taken from Military satalites and are ultimately payed for by the tax payer.
