For an i7 system? I think RAM will drop a bit by then.
I don't share Tarinder's faith that motherboards will drop much though. Maybe 20-30 quid or so to take the early adopter shine off, but we need P55 and equivalents to actually make them affordable, and my own guess is that that will be saved for a years time (depending on AMD). Tarinder might have some inside info but we can only ask for his informal opinion if that's the case ;)
The new socket is still rumour, but it's meant to be either 1160 (or 1156 if you like your rumours very speculative). Biscuit is right that it goes back to dual channel as well. Personally that suits me fine - a nice tightly optimised chipset that only has one bridge chip, dual channel memory and so on would be great, especially if they take another leaf from AMDs book and make the more mainstream motherboard last for more than one CPU generation. By all means let the uber enthusiasts upgrade motherboards every year, they might have done that anyway, but us mere mortals want to keep them longer!

Yeah, agree with Kalniel DDR3 will likely have dropped a bit and I expect the will be cheaper motherboards available once all the major manufacturers have brought a couple of X58 products to market, but I would still expect to pay £180+ for the board, £180 for 6GB of 1333 RAM and £250 for the processor. Which makes for a sizeable chunk of anybodies budget.

Asus P6T DELUXE X58 Socket 1366 7.1 channel audio ATX Motherboard

£249.97inc vat
Ouch. Not available to view yet, but it looks like Hexus were right in the assumption that the early stock will trickle in - unless this is just ebuyer getting ready.
Re: Reviews - Intel Core i7 - everything that Core 2 should have been - performance n
One tip: don't buy the "3 packs" of DDR3 RAM -- it is still a huge ripoff compared to 2-packs with identical RAM! Benchmarks I've read indicate that 3-channel is not even that important anyway. Consider just using 1 or 2 2-packs, then top it up in a year or two with another 2 sticks.
Re: Reviews - Intel Core i7 - everything that Core 2 should have been - performance n
Hmm that I think you will find is um wrong looking at like for like 2x1GB and 3x1GB corsair DDR3 available from Scan.
2x1GB = £67.68 = £33.84 per GB
3x1GB = £105.71 = £35.24 per GB
So to get tri-channel memory you spend a total of an additional £1.40 per GB not only that you get matched sticks. Wouldn't exactly call that a huge rip off.
And I'm pretty sure you either have tri-channel or single channel and since the differecnces are there between single and duel cahnnel I guess they will be even larger between single and tri.
Re: Reviews - Intel Core i7 - everything that Core 2 should have been - performance n
You seem to forget 2 things:
1. core 2 cpu can be dual in the same computer. So if you use 2 core 2 quad (8 cores) it is faster than any i7.
2. i7 work with ram trio. So if you need 8 gig of ram minimum like me, you are forced to buy 12 gig of ram which put your whole system higher priced in the end...
So my question is: will they release dual i7 soon?

In what tasks? If you need mutli-CPU then just wait for nehalem EP.

Or.. just put 2x4gb/4x2gb sticks in. You don't have to use triple channel.
