NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 480 finally unleashed. Reviewed and rated.

Ask 100 enthusiasts what they'd like to see in a cutting-edge graphics card and criterion such as forward-looking design, performance, energy efficiency, and, of course, price will crop up. GF100, appreciating its time of arrival, needs to be almost all things to all people. Let's take each of these in turn and evaluate how good NVIDIA's new GPUs are.

As nibbler said, it's hotter and draws more power but it sure is hot. Hopefully this will bring down the price of AMD cards a bit I'd quite like a 5850 or perhaps another 5770.

According to other reviews the 470 is just as fast or faster then the 5870 while being cheaper (about $50). The 5850 is doing fine, but the 5870 is in trouble... ATi is in trouble...

Re: NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 480 finally unleashed. Reviewed and rated.

Grief, that's packing some real heat there. As originally predicted, it's the 5970 it has to beat.

Higher temperatures, higher power consumption... if ATI bring the price of the 5970 down, which I suspect they probably could do, then they've still got the market fairly wrapped up.

As it stands though, you have to say that the GTX 480 is an interesting prospect for high performance graphics - really depends how ATI react.

Re: NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 480 finally unleashed. Reviewed and rated.

TBH,the card is not that impressive!!

The only ATI card which is going to drop in price is the HD5970.

The GTX480 has higher peak power consumption than a HD5970!!

The HD5870 is priced at the same level as the GTX470.

Even if the GTX470 is faster Nvidia still has no card to counter the HD5850 at around £200 to £250.

On top of this none of the sub £200 ATI 5 series cards are going to drop in price either!

    Meh!

Re: NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 480 finally unleashed. Reviewed and rated.

Two HD5850's worth of cost, Two HD5870's worth of power consumption, one HD5870's worth of performance. There's not much else to say. The fact that the GTX480 and HD5870 are on a par in Bad Company 2 and Crysis Warhead, two nvidia-biased titles says it all. The 1536MB of memory on the 480 will help at 8xAA at 2560x1600, but so few games will really run smoothly at that setting there's no point. It really annoys me when websites review mostly outdated games, cite 'stratospheric' frame rates, yet there is a huge pile of titles out there that three GTX480s couldn't even hope to run at 2560x1600, even 1920x1200 would be a struggle. I don't consider an average frame rate of 75 'stratospheric', not when the minimum is 40.

If the GTX480 can't beat the HD5870, the GTX470 sure as hell won't. I imagine the same trends that compare the HD5870 and GTX480 will happen with the HD5850 and GTX470, which means the GTX470 will be £320 vs £250, and still use bootloads more power.
The GTX400 series architecture really is poor, it's R600 all over again.

Lastly, what's the availability of these cards going to be like? I'm betting as good or slightly better than the HD5870 at launch, and I say slightly better simply because you'd be a fool to buy one.

Although CAT-THE-FIFTH didn't exactly disappoint me with his exclamation mark usage, I was still expecting more.

I'm unsure if it warrants a £150~ premium over the HD5870.
