Underwhelming.

They've set it up to match the 5850 in terms of price, and then failed to beat it in terms of performance. To be honest, it's just continuing in the same disappointing Fermi theme.

If they don't have a reference card how do they know how the non-references compare. More t the point, i guess they can only review what they manage to get hold of.

This is just comparing apples to apples. Any non-reference reviews will likely follow in due course.

Another disappointing Fermi showing.

Ultimately though, us consumers are going to lose out - had nvidia managed to properly challenge the 5850, we could have seen some price cuts.

Guess I'll just have to wait for the next generation GPU battles to see how things work out there.

On the performance/cost perspective, Anandtech wasn't too disappointed. They seem to think that it's positioned quite appropriately. Problem is, Fermi is Fermi, which is hot and therefore loud - nVidia is just minimising damage in a weak position.

That's because nvidia pricing in the US is a lot different to in Europe. ATI cards do not carry a markup in europe when translating from the USD price and adding VAT. Nvidia cards carry a substantial markup.

The price of an HD5970 in the UK, considering USD->GBP + VAT should be £570, when realistically, they're £470-£520.
The price of a GTX480 in the UK, considering USD->GBP + VAT should be £405, when realistically, all bar the dodgy OEM cards are £425-£450.

OCUK value 470 = £281.99

£22 for a quite a large increase in fps, I'd take it

or by the same token, XFX HD5850 £251.91, £8 less for an increase in fps.

Considering that there are quite a few HD5850 1GB cards under £250, the GTX465 and GTX470 still look quite expensive.

this sums up the whole card.
Why would anyone buy the 465 when you can get the 470's performance for a lot less in the form of a 5850.

For me nvidia's whole product line is a huge fail...
I hoped that this card will drive the prices down a bit, but it won't Happen..

i wouldnt call them junk, not considering the 1st round of improvements with the 256 drivers.
