Exactly. The fact that the Freecom mechanical drive was not even tested on USB 3 to measure the difference (if any) is disappointing.

How exactly do you propose that Hexus test a native USB 2.0 portable hard drive on USB 3? Rewire the connector themselves? :rolleyes:

What's disappointing (although perhaps understandable given the time limitations that bind most reviews) is that the caddy wasn't tested with a 2.5" mechnical drive, as that is probably where it would be most use. You could easily add a 320GB 5400rpm drive to this for a total cost of < £50 and get a very fast, relatively cheap portable storage.

Any chance of an update to the tests in the near future? :hexlub:

USB3 should be able to power a 7200rpm 2.5" drive, love to see if it can, and what the resulting performance is like.......... :)

You want a 2.5in, 7,200rpm hard-drive tested on this caddy in USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 modes? You got it, but it will have to wait until tomorrow afternoon. Significant time pressure for launches next week :)

Yup, it does.

Here's how a Samsung 160GB, 7,200rpm performs on the best-case scenario sequential test:

nice, i am guessing that is about double what is typical for a 'fast' USB2 drive.....?

probably closer to 100MB/s on a newer drive!

More than double: USB 2.0 bottlenecks at about 33MB/s read. Interestingly, it's a little behind the 64GB USB flash drive in reading, but a little ahead in writing. I will be very interested to see the real world results :)

yes that is from similar enclosure. Twice as fast as my old 250Gb sata 2 disks :)

Forgot to add that it can be powered from some usb 2.0 and tv usb ports. This makes all flash sticks a bit useless unless you have small pockets^^

the 8GB sequential read speed is what sells it for me.

using a modern high-speed 2.5" spindle drive i can well see that hitting 100MB/s, three times the speed that USB2 will permit.

that reduces my backup times from 9 hours to 3 on a terrabyte container.

for £16!

And having read the review again, I'm glad it was updated. We often move large data files (> 2GB) around at work, and being able to more than halve the time they take to copy would be a huge advantage: might be time to start pushing for some USB 3 expansion cards :D
