Portable and powerful but rough around the edges.

Cool battery life. For a screen of that size (was the screen on during that 720p clip?), it's really good.

The system software/crapware wouldn't concern me, as I'd automatically reinstall Windows - if I ever bought this D.E.L.L., that is. However, it's not fair on most users as they may lack the competence to do system reinstalls.

Oops, did I just compliment myself?

What I want is something like this, but with a half decent discreet GPU. The Acer 4830TG looks to be best bet but the improved Dell quality would be preferred if only....

What is it with these stupidly low vertical resolutions? Come on laptop makers, give us something useable for editing long documents or running debuggers with all their windows.

I had a dell in 2004 with 19?? x 12?? pixels, and it was great. Are they buying surplus panels from cheap TV production runs or what?

And the software writers don't help. Menu lines, icon bars, ribbons, status lines are all horizontal control elements. In these days of widescreens with low vertical pixel count I'm left with around half the screen for my working area. Why can't the microsoft ribbon be pulled off to the left to use some of the unwanted horizontal space? The Gimp interface really makes sense on these piss-poor laptop screens.

The XPS 15z has a discreet graphics card. Cost you another couple of hundred, probably, but you get a 1080 screen...

    14" and still only 1366 x 768? aww shame.

I would rather have a real laptop

Thanks for that. Whilst it's only one inch, I'd prefer to get smaller than 15" (13 or 14) and although 1080 is beautiful on my 24" dell desktop monitor, I would prefer lower for a laptop (games would be slower too unless upscaled). Agree that 1366 x 786 is ridiculous but 1600x900 would be ideal, in fact 1600x1000 would be better (or 1650x1080 heh!).

Asus U46SV also looks good as it has a GT540M but it's a bit more pricey than a 4830tg...

For anyone thinking of getting a Dell, take a look at their Vostro 3xxx line. Slighlty more expensive than the Inspiron line, but they pack a lot of features, are well built, use a matte screen and include no bloatware. I would honestly take the Vostro 3450 over the Inspiron 14z anyday. If only Dell gave the option of a higher resolution screen than 1366x768 though!

If you want a high res screen and a dedicated card get a Thinkpad W series laptop, 15.6" and 1920 x 1200
