I think I am going to wait for the 1440p monitors to drop in price.

I do struggle to understand why it's soooo much more expensive. It's only a different aspect ratio panel - there's no other new technology involved. Manufacturers would create market demand much quicker, convince people to upgrade more and therefore get more profit in the long run IF they didn't rip off the early adopters every time.

I agree... Even the 21:9 screen by LG is too expensive and you can actually get 3 x 23" LG IPS monitors for LESS! Having 3 separate screens will eliminate the horrible fisheye effect you'd get gaming with a single flat 21:9 panel (as you can angle the left & right screens to the correct position). Think i'll give single 21:9 screens a miss.

I currently have a 3 x 22 (1680x1050) setup at home and wonder if this would make for a good swap on the centre monitor? Might be worth further research on that I guess.

Why not stick the taskbar up the right/left hand of the monitor? I have mine running down, and I'd never go back now.

Re: Reviews - Philips 298P4QJEB superwidescreen monitor

Just to round this thread off… I know I said it was too expensive but it is my Birthday so I’ve put the guilt of blowing so much money on one monitor to one side and treated myself to one of these.

I’ve been up and running with it long enough to give a personal review and my impression is that this is fantastic. Far better than I thought it would be…

I have a triple boot setup and have set the desktop fine in Windows 7, 8 and Ubuntu. Setting it up is as easy as plugging it in and setting the resolution. It’s replaced a 20” Hewlett Packard 1600 X 900 monitor, which I thought had a good picture but this 21 X 9 just blows it out of the water.

So much space on the desktop leaves more room for Photoshop work as I quickly tried to make up some desktop background pictures the right size. You Tube videos adjust automatically to full screen and if I can’t use my main telly then I’ve have no worries watching movies on this instead. Media Player Classic resizes the picture as required so there’s no black border.

By far the best bit… The extra peripheral vision means the immersion in first person shooters is far better than I thought it would be and, for me, renders a three screen set up as unnecessary. (Phew ! I don’t have the room, anyway).

All the games I’ve tried it with so far work fine and look great at 2560 X 1080

I’m working my way down my Steam account but I’ve only had time to have a decent try with Alien versus Predator, Bioshock & Half-Life 2. Also Crysis, Crysis Warhead and Crysis 2 using the MalDoHD & Blackfire mods, They all adjusted to the new resolution with no problem.

My graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD5850 1GB and using Fraps I get the impression that the performance hit is quite negligable. But to be honest it’s nothing major and the picture is so glorious that I’ve not noticed.

So in conclusion, the unusual resolution is no problem, it’s the best picture I’ve ever seen and if you’re tempted by one of these and can afford it then go for it – I’m glad I saw this review, thanks Hexus..

Media Player Classic does not play blu-rays and on this monitor your only get a max 1080p so get black bars all around. I chased Phillips support were no help in this matter and my nero told me this.

thank you for your e-mail and your attachements.

Within the resolution of 2560 x 1080 the playback will always be at maximum of the FullHD resolution of 1920 x 1080. (blu-ray specification)

Details of the Blu-ray specification can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc
Video resolution details at headline Video on this page.

You will always get black borders on fullscreen of the playback window or cut borders (zoom-function of the playback software) on such display setting.

For typical Fullscreen experience please change the resolution of your monitor to the FullHD resolution 1920 x 1080.

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

    Best Regards

    Nero Support

so you want to play a Blu-ray movies in full screen your stuffed.

I read this and thought, 'you know what that's a really logical thing to do on a widescreen monitor'. I did it yesterday and cannot fathom why i didnt do it earlier. I have the Dell 21:9 monitor instead of the Phillips but my word it's a decent improvement! The only thing i think i would prefer is to switch the start button to the bottom and the time/date/services at the top.
