I like the look of this tablet - but I'd much rather prefer a tablet device that lets me play my steam games on. I wonder if it's possible to install windows 8.1 on this and install steam on it.
it's running a tegra chip, like ALL nvidia android devices... it can't run windows unless it's rt (when support arrives) although you may be able to stream to it like the older shield handheldOriginally Posted by RT-XD
Bought my parents the Advent (nVidia) Tegra Note last Christmas for the bargain price of £89, best tablet deal so far. It's well built, sturdy, fast, in-built stylus, front facing speakers. Screen is average at best, but it's a quality piece of kit otherwise. Will definitely be looking into these for this Christmas just as tablets in their own right.
Also as the article points out, regular updates to Android too!

Install Windows 8.1 and play Steam games on it. Not a chance.
But then you don't have to. That's what GameStream is for. nVidia support 120 games officially, but you can launch Steam Big Picture from the Shield to play anything if the controller maps (or can be mapped).
So it's a tablet for gaming, but you have a separate display and controller? Can't exactly play on the train or in bed so you may as well use your TV as the display and get a proper games console.
Serious about portable gaming? I'd personally recommend a Vita (slightly flawed but still very good).
This is a games console... or hopes to be... and also has a use away from the TV unlike a current console.
We have been lucky enough to have a play about with these in the flesh and it really is an amazing product!
Interesting take on it. I worry about plugging something into the wall then using it loads, always scared I'm going to run the battery into the ground. For a while I didn't have a battery in my laptop as it was basically a desktop replacement and I was scared of ruining the battery!
Two things, one does he talk like in real life and two, I think you would look a bit of a tool in a coffee shop with a controller playing it like that guy was!
Other than that looks ok, gamestream is ok but has its drawbacks, and again battery life.

I like the look of it, think it does many jobs very well but as a red team gfx user this tablet is useless to me. Oh well.
Seeing the stylus raises a question; can it stream Photoshop and other productivity software?
It does lose some functionality but it's still a very powerful and relatively cheap android tablet with some nice features ( front facing speakers, worth-while front facing camera, stylus)

But then I'm a twitch FPS PC keyboard/mouse gamer and I don't get consoles either. I dare say I'm not their target audience.
Welp, that's an instant buy from me. I already own the tegra note 7 and my main issues with it are build quality (microUSB port getting a bit dodgy 8 months after purchase, not abused), the front camera being a measly 640x480 and the lack of RAM. This product fixes at least two of those. I'll probably buy it through a mate in the US though as then tablet, controller and cover costs the same as the tablet alone in the UK. Bit sad that the controller couldn't be used with a PC so when the tablet eventually gets thrown out I'm stuck with a useless controller.
a propper console like a xbone or playstation? why compromise when you can have your beast rig rendering and use this as a pass through to your tv?
that seems like the main application, if your a pure tablet user you might be better of with a nexus (cheaper) if you have a PC with a geforce 6xx+ gfx card you pay a bit more to be able to turn your tablet in to a console. seems handy (unless your tv is 5 meters away from your pc and you have a 7.5 meter HDMI cable.... also works).
Device looks solid enough (although a gamepad should be bundled by default for a "gaming tablet"), but let's be honest - the article isn't a review. Not by a long shot. It's a barebones first-impressions piece with a bunch of nVidia slides and promo photos, and I'll not lie, reading the first couple of paragraphs, I almost thought I'd stumbled upon an advertorial for a device that isn't out for another 3 weeks. Even PCPer, who have the only benchmark numbers I've seen for the device, have said the article is just a preview/announcement.
