Not a good deal in the UK at the moment. 970 is actually cheaper!

It's more than £200 when it should be lower.

The 4GB version starts at £175.

    Edit!!

Sadly for AMD the £ has dropped by 10% so this would have been probably just under £200.

That's just disappointing. Really wanted more 980 than 970 from this, in a good few benchmarks it's not even 970.

Re: AMD Radeon RX 480 (14nm Polaris)

Strange about the temperature and throttling issue, prior to release reports were pointing towards it as cool and a good overclocker.

So a 8GB card for 1440p, with the 4GB card be better suited just for 1080p then?

Looking forward to 4GB and crossfire reviews to see what can be done for less and 1080 money!

Sapphire RX 480 8GB $359.00CAN and Asus Turbo 4GB GTX 970 reduced from $445.00 to $350.00CAN. So with price reductions you can choose a slightly faster 970 4GB or a newer tech 8GB RX 480 here in Canada. Unfortunately the 970 I purchased two months ago cost $480.00Can

Wow - this card was overhyped. I wasn't expecting 980 performance but I expect the 970 to be beaten easily. Guess I'll hang on to my 580 for a few more weeks to see if the aftermarket boards are better.

Re: AMD Radeon RX 480 (14nm Polaris)

Yes, right now I would buy the 8GB RX 480 and OC it. I think you'll hit 970 speeds easy. Don't forget, there is also lots more room for driver performance enhancements with the newer card too. Secondly, Nvidia will be putting all their driver development time on the new 1000 series.

Re: AMD Radeon RX 480 (14nm Polaris)

Looking at other reviews this card should have been launched as an 8GB card with 1330MHz clock and a slightly better cooler. Power usage would have been about the same as the 1070 but more importantly the performance would be solidly inbetween the 970 and 980.

Re: AMD Radeon RX 480 (14nm Polaris)

I'm a little underwhelmed, although I suppose that's perhaps as much to do with my expectations as anything else.

I really thought this card would be consistently better than the 970 and the 390, but its just not quite there. Power consumption which is only marginally better than the 1070 is also not what I expected.

Overall is seems like an acceptable to good release for the market segment and price point, but in a market where Nvidia is charging whatever they want, this isn't exactly the 'everyday peoples champion' that shakes things up I expected it to be.

Re: AMD Radeon RX 480 (14nm Polaris)

Well thats..... disappointing. Equivalent or even weaker in some cases than the 390, and a fair way off the 970 which can now be had for pretty much the same price. Guess we wait for the 490.

Interesting that in some games it gives 980 performance though. It's a curious mixed bag - clearly excellent in some ways, but inconsistent. That kind of points to an imbalanced architecture: some games clearly use some instruction that Polaris struggles to process. If that's true across the architecture and into Vega then they *really* need to work on the software side to optimise those bits of code...

Re: AMD Radeon RX 480 (14nm Polaris)

Really interesting review, thanks Hexus. Throwing in the older cards is fascinating for potential upgrades and seeing what a similar mainstream product did on the last node process.

The performance profile across games is as mentioned quite different from past AMD cards. DX12 looks like it'll really shine, and I wasn't expecting it to do so well in The Division. Could be unbalanced architecture.. or could be that previous cards were hitting bottlenecks in certain circumstances that this card is able to overcome more easily, giving a greater than expected result.

It will be good to see how the partner OC models compare to the partner OC 970 in this review.

TPU tested 16 games and came up with the following average:

    http://i.imgur.com/LYu4iJ3.png

The 4GB version at £175ish is well priced but the 8GB pricing is really not improving bang4buck that much at all although someone mentioned the 4GB and 8GB models are the same cards(not sure how that works out).

The pound has not helped, but I am finding it hard to understand why the performance is inconsistent.

The 8GB cards are really not that cheap and are around R9 390 and R9 390X level pricing.

It does look the GPU-Z info indicates a C7 stepping IIRC,so I feel its another GF feck up.

At this point there really isn't a compelling £200 to £300 card IMHO.

Sadly,I expect the GTX1060 might be that card.

Re: AMD Radeon RX 480 (14nm Polaris)

The price is massively disappointing to me.
8gb 480 $229 which according to xe.com equates to £169 at the current lower exchange rate (which seems to be slowly going back up)

Not sure on the import duty rate though.
