I like the fact that Hexus actually used Intel versions of the same chassis so we can actually have a more accurate comparison of the CPUs!! Not many websites bother to do that,so good on Hexus!!

Interesting that in Timespy it's right up there with a GTX 1060 6GB; I'd love to see a laptop with the Ryzen 5 2500U and an RX 580, particularly if AMD could sort the graphics switching out nicely...!

Matching a 1060 makes sense, the 580 is a bit faster in desktop form (so once slowed down to fit in a laptop the 1060 catches up). I'd rather see small vega in a laptop with small ryzen, after all it ought to be better than a 580

I second the comments of those above asking for a smaller Vega in the laptop at low clock speeds. Vega's power inefficiency is because it's overvolted and overclocked as standard, just like Fury was. If AMD dialled it back, it'd be a nice fit. Perhaps something like an RX Vega 32 at ~1GHz clock speed.

They are both the GL702 series so the length and breadth are the same,as is the screen and battery capacity.

At least that way battery life measurements seem more relevant.

I still think it would generate too much heat for laptop cooling, I guess we might find out in the new year if models release with VEGA.

What I find ridiculous about this article is that it implies the RX 580 is weak and needs to reduce settings to medium to play games fine.
I actually had this laptop for over a month now and most games run easily maxed out.
Reducing to 'High' perhaps is warranted... but only because running on Ultra has practically no discernible difference in terms of graphics which comes with a too high hit on performance.

I limit the FPS in drivers to 60 though as there's 0 point in going over this limit since the laptop's display doesn't go above 60Hz.

Otherwise, I do agree with the comments on the fan noise and battery.
Asus could have spared a bit more effort to implement a much less noisy solution (which is indeed quite distracting and even headache inducing if it's kept at 100%) and a better battery.

Many Intel+Nvidia laptops come with much higher TDP requirements than this Asus laptop (seeing how the RX 580 in this laptop is restricted to 68W) and those don't have an issue with temperatures or noise (because the OEM's implement proper cooling on them - so I really don't understand why didn't Asus do things better here?).

In regards to temperatures (and to improve noise levels)... for this bit I'd probably say that it might benefit by Asus simply using a better thermal paste such as GeLid Extreme (and also spread it better - in a thinner form across both CPU and GPU dies).
This alone could easily scale back the noise and further improve thermals, but I have to say that unless you are stressing the CPU and GPU to the maximum, temps usually stay below 80 degrees C (in range of 70 to 75 degrees).

What could Asus do to improve noise problems?
They'd likely need to redesign the cooling with more efficient fans that are quieter and better heat transfer systems.

As I said, many other Intel+Nvidia laptops come with far higher TDP requirements... to think Asus would 'cheap out' on this system is ridiculous... especially since it's a first all AMD system that's quite powerful, and a 'poster child' of sorts for AMD.

I got that laptop for work to replace another 4core intel i7 with 1060. The multiprocessing power is fantastic. Is super thin for a laptop with a desktop cpu and the 580 serves very well in GPU rendering.

In many 3D apps that I am using is faster than 1060 and in gaming in some game titles performs better than my 1060 but it is almost the same think as in other game tiles 1060 has 3 to 5 frames more.

It’s a safe bet for everyone that need multiprocessing power and even the new i9 6core for mobile will be slower in multithreading and you will have to wait many months to become available in the market.

As for the noise sector with full load cpu+gpu for rendering the noise is not a big deal. Is almost the same like my other same chassis laptop with i7 and 1060. Only the power supply is larger.
