The Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop - brought to you by Salvador Dali.
"and Microsoft quotes typical battery life as 36 hours" - seriously? I thought this would be the main negative point of the review. Not really practical if you're hacking away at a keyboard for 8 hours a day - will struggle to get through a working week!
Logitech MK520 - "A battery life of up to three years for the keyboard and eighteen months for the mouse practically eliminates the need to replace batteries."
jimbo - thanks for pointing that out. 36 hours was a mistake on our part, the review now correctly states 36 months.
I had considered trying that keyboard, but I think the "Microsoft ergonomic keyboard 4000" it still the best, serving me well for the last ~10 years. I also play games, that mouse would be useless to me.
36 months makes a lot more sense! Thought it was a bit odd :)
Tried the 4000 years ago and could never really get used to it. I wish they would bring back the 3000 keyboard
<Slightly OT>
I've got the MK520 at work (and so does almost every other employee after our IT guy saw how great my set was :)). Anyway, while the keyboard truly lasts years (plural) on a set of batteries, the mouse only gets about 6 months out of its battery, if that. If anything, the mouse is the weak part of the set. There's another set, the MK620 (which Logitech surprisingly doesn't list or advertise for), which has the same keyboard, but throws in the "Marathon Mouse". Problem is, that set costs about twice as much.

I never really understood the idea of backlit keys outside of gamer bling. It always seemed like a solution looking for a problem. Too expensive to put on keyboards for the occasional typist where it might be needed and redundant for anyone using the keyboard on a regular basis.
will stick with my 4000 ergo keyboard use it for typing and gaming on
The mouse in this set seems like a rather half-hearted attempt at something a bit like a vertical mouse. I have been using an Evoluent mouse for the last year, available in two sizes and both right and left hand drive. I only wish the gaming mouse manufacturers would make something similar with gaming spec hardware. https://evoluent.com/
I use this Sculpt keyboard at home and love it. Batteries last ages, but not 36 months! I probably change them about once per year, thought that might be more often in an office environment. I also use the keyboard for gaming and I don't have any issues at all.
I don't have the Sculpt mouse detailed in this review. You can get the keyboard on its own if you buy the Business version... same keyboard, just no bundled mouse.
I've been using MS ergo keyboards for a very long time, and use my (very old) MS Natural Keyboard Pro at work. I also have the Ergo 4000, but I really don't rate it... the keys are very mushy, IMHO. The 4000 is not sitting in the loft as a back-up should one of the other 2 fail, though in reality, I would still hesitate to use it again.
+1 to this.
I'm still happily using my Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 V1.0 and wouldn't switch unless I could find a better keyboard for my daily usage.
I'd love to have a detachable numpad or one on the left-hand side of the keyboard, but not if it meant be forced to go wireless.
As for my mouse, I highly recommend to everyone to look into the Evoluent VerticalMouse series. They do wireless and wired versions for both lefties and righties and they're seriously amazing (even for gaming) once you get used to the different way to use it.
I wouldn't go back to a normal-style mouse now.
Looks futuristic and interesting
