Because it's £15 cheaper and doesn't tie you to that particular mat.

Based on commnts about how and how well it works so far, additional coils won't be anything special... just more expensive and hogging all your USBs.

£80 for a largely useless mouse mat. A-ha-ha-ha. Ha-ha-ha-ha. Oh my sides! If you could use the mouse while it changed on the mat I could understand this, but this idea is just a useless gimmick.

Why micro-USB at the mouse end and not USB-C? And just use AA batteries so they can be quickly interchanged if needs be like my Performance MX has rather than what's presumably a non-interchangable propriety battery (the mouse dies when the battery dies)? So many needless compromises.

I'm using the Logitech G903 with the Logitech PowerPlay mousemat. £260 MSRP. But it won't charge anything but my mouse. At least this can be used to charge anything Qi enabled.

Getting rid of the wires is lovely though. Especially when you then don't need to consider ever charging it. It gives the mouse a real sense of freedom. I can lie stuff anywhere I like on my desk without ever needing to fret about what I might bump into or move.

My mousemat is almost exactly the same size as a Corsair MM1000. I see no reason why I couldn't charge my phone and use the mouse at the same time, even with 6000 horizontal pixels.

I'm sure you could, but I'd be knocking the phone off the QI pad a few times a day, getting slightly more annoyed each time wondering why I hadn't just bought a £5 pad and £10 mat.

Horses for courses then I think. I use around 3000 DPI on my mouse, which means I move my mouse about 2" to achieve edge to edge, even with 6000 pixels to run across. I personally think these sorts of mousemats are a great idea, and definitely a sign of what's to come.

Sure, there'll be some teething issues, and some users who will find them unusable due to knocking their device about, but give it another couple of years and we'll see some great stuff :)

I wonder if a more sensitive receiver could be incorporated into these kind of pads?? It wouldn't need to be that long range either.

I can see merits for the wire attaching to the mat as opposed to the mouse for the same reason as someone might want a wireless mouse to begin with.
The additional freedom that offers.

However I think there is a better solution than the mat.
Something such as WattUp, which their video shows charging iPhones at up to 15 feet away.
The power requirements for a mouse would be far less, so I wonder if that could be implemented in something much like Logitech's universal receivers, where it also functions as a wireless power transmitter for a few peripherals such as keyboard, mouse and headset.

We could ofc hope for a standard there, allowing different brands of devices to work off the same transmitter.
But that is just wishful thinking I expect.
