Well I dont think its going to work as it is in a chip seeing as it needs to be
pumped by another laser of different material
Er.... the idea is to use it as an interconnect between systems - and since they can take the fibre right up to the silicon it has all the chance to work in the world.
but it needs to be pumped by a seperate laser which isnt silicon based.
thereby making the cost savings and implementation more difficult therefore
its not a complete silicon solution. I would like to know how this will be integrated.
Did you not read the story? Intel have developed a Silicon based laser - they issued a press release about it a while back.
Also this technology is some 10 years off integration
I havent read that much about it and what I have read is basic. what laser type is the pump, can it be used to create multiple modes in parallel? can they be used to pump other silicon lasers and so on? Without knowing this its hard to know how cheap it could possibly be. Im hoping that they can do the above and produce THz wavelengths as we could start seeing a lot of new cool stuff (cant think of a better term haha)
Knowing what the pump is,how its connected and how many it can drive is in my opinion important.
Intel have the first continuous silicon laser - they have it working, and I have a chip in my bag which has the product on it.
