Not true, imo. "Enthusiasts", typically speaking, are the people who still use bang for buck but they use it in crazy places like, M.2 drives, top end graphics cards cases, monitors, etc. They'll spend real money because they feel a real feeling of..accomplishment ? ANYWHO. My entire point is, no enthusiast is changing their m.2 to one of these. The types of people who do that aren't enthusiasts, they're the show offs, the clowns, the ones who must have the best etc. because yeah it might be faster at read and write in single file performance, but considering that with a current 1tb m.2 (which is literally half the price of this) games open before I click the buttons, and the ones with 4K textures are annoying purely because I have to wait so long for my mates to load in...if you're paying twice as much for what would equate to a nominal amount of performance increase, you're not en enthusiast..you're just a clown.

EDIT: before it's brought up, every reference to media production was purposely left out, as this wouldn't be used for that, as there are better options, done a thousand different better ways with a thousand different budgets. To be fair... although I can see some point in your logic I strongly disagree. Someone with a new Ryzen 3 system with a decent X570 board would be mad not to buy one of these if they are in for a decent upgrade. I have a corsair g3 nvme drive and it's awesome makes an absolutely huge difference to how the system responds in normal useage
any chance of testing a Gen 3 drive in the Gen 4 slot too see if it goes any faster? see whether the Gen 3's are forward compatible?Quote:

to see whether its worth paying so much for the Gen 4. they all seem to cap around these speeds so maybe there more to be had from them in the faster Gen 4 slot?

Did I miss something or was this the only PCIE G4 x 4 drive they tested? Why would they compare it to only Gen3 drives???
There's not many PCIE Gen 4 options out there right now (and some of the current Gen 4 M.2 SSDs - e.g. Sabrent - use relatively slow FLASH memory despite the fast interface) - but still a useful article, if only to get a handle on the difference in performance between PCIE generations.

Honestly, I would have liked to have seen a little bit of info over how hot they get etc and/or whether their performance is affected by being too hot like some of the older cards are/were.

wELL When you were using a 4200rpm laptop hard drive previously , ofc it was awesome.
Otherwise going from a gen3 to a gen4 will make SFA difference, If you know enough to buy this then your system is already up to snuff.
And these are the launch prices , competition will soon drive them down significantly. BUT some ppl have to have the fastest,now, so spend your money.
I will say owning a 3700x on an x570 board I wanted 2 nvme drives (boot and cache for spinners).
After looking into the performance differences vs the price it was 2 gen3 drives. No doubt over time the tech will mature and eventually be the standard but currently the most I would pay is 10% more.
As it is my system is using ram caching anyway so regular tasks come from ram and a gen3 nvme fallback is hardly a slouch.
What do you mean? NewEgg has 20 listed, Microcenter has 3 of its own. I agree that it's nice to see how this performs from a generational interface standpoint, but I feel like this is just lazy to not have a single other gen 4 drive to compare within generations. (I also get that, because their speeds are so fast, it's hard to even think of real life, non-artificial situations where most of us can use these, but still... I don't come to Hexus to here them say "yup, the Gen 4 drive is faster than the non-Gen 4 drives. What's the point?)

On the other hand: It's a Seagate - the company that took advantage of the Thai floods to jack up prices and slash warranties on its products at the same time as reliability took a dive to lows not seen since the early 1990s.
I'd rather give my money to another company - one that actually specialises in silicon.
Personally, I'd rather spend some more and get one of the few drives left that still use MLC (think Samsung 970 Pro or a generation older) which will perform well throughout the entire drive size and likely last longer while being hammered than get one of these PCIe Gen 4 clown drives that boast with big numbers and fall flat on their face once the "SLC" cache runs out... but that's just me
Writing from my Ryzen 2200g with biostar SSD and jawdroping performance of this WD drive makes me think I have an old system already.
Not tempted upgrade my 970 EVO's just yet. Real world and perceptible differences are all that matters to me.
