I interpreted it as meaning someone who cares more about how other people see them by buying it, rather than what performance they can get from it.

People who buy fans in 'beige & brown' care what people think??!!

Nah, Noctua fans have always been the best for performance vs noise. Most fans beat them on one or the other, but none have the balance quite as good.

Many buying Apple products (but obviously not everyone) certainly seem to care that people know they own it, despite there being rival products that are cheaper and more capable, but I agree that I can't see that applying to many buying fans. But those Apple buyers who care about others see them likely aren't interested in individual components anyway, they only care about the end product having an Apple logo.

As I said, Noctua's reputation for quality and performance is what prompted me to look in their direction when I chose components for my current build. I'm less concerned about the noise aspect personally, but I appreciate that they are good at that too.

    Re: Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black

I appreciate that this Noctua (and DRP4) are seriously to class coolers, but something is definitely not right with the cooling performance of that Corsair AIO.

I also get frustrated that the Arctic Liquid Freezer II is rarely mentioned in these discussions... Pretty much all reviews show it is cooler, quieter and cheaper than the Noctua.

I have the original beige cooler in my desktop and it is by far the most impressive cooler I have ever used. I replaced my dying Corsair H110i and I never looked back.

    Re: Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black

The review is based on the H150i running at its slowest settings (next step down would be 0RPM mode) because it defaults to quiet mode. The Noctua is allowed to do what it likes while the Corsair is being severely hamstrung and running at 30% pump speed and max 50% fan speeds.

I didn't see that in the review? Did I miss it?

As above - it wasn't the painting that was the issue. It was the combination of that paint and the soldering process which required the R&D. They were asked to do this ages ago and declined because of those problems. If there was demand and people weren't buying it for the looks why would they not produce a black model earlier / at the same price if it was so trivial?

    Re: Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black

The test methodology is very fuzzy when it comes to the AIO settings but the H150i defaults I think to quiet mode out of the box for pump and fans. If the H150 is set up as it should be, then the settings are controlled by the software, which doesn't appear to be used at all.

The biggest giveaway is the results, as user Stu C has also pointed out. The results are way off for what a decent AIO should be and water-based coolers just don't have that kind of disadvantage over air coolers. It's obvious when you see it fail a simple overclock when the air cooler passed quite easily. That simply should not happen unless the AIO is being held back, in this case, by its fan/pump profile.

Gamers Nexus did a big test of air vs water recently under controlled conditions, have a watch if you want to see what more comparable results look like.

I'm wondering if one of these can run my 3600 with the fans stopped at idle. As in the PC will be silent while browsing hexus.net. Otherwise it's overkill and I may as well get the NH-U12S.

So how do these compare to the single fan config of the NH-D15 or using the smaller NH models?

Other cooler manufacturers don't have issues making painted coolers. It's a bit apple-like to claim that a process other manufacturers are doing is too hard, and then expect praise when they finally catch up to the rest of the market

A U12S can cool a 3600 just fine with no fan entirely - my silverstone AR01 managed to cool my 3700X with PBO on under full load without overheating or throttling (i.e. operating well above base frequency). So long as your motherboard is happy to run the CPU fan semi-passive (mine has an artificial software lockout on semi-passive operation for whatever's in the CPU fan header, and as yours is asus then you might find the same) then you won't overheat a 3600 with just about any decent cooler

Noctua also provides fresh mounting hardware for new CPU sockets when they come out. This has value as well.
I like this cooler and will probably get one of them.

    Re: Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black

I've just managed to get my hands on one (thanks to Scan with free shipping) after assembling the bulk of my new, sensible value, last me as long as my last one (about 7 and a bit years), system (a 3900x on an MSI Unify, no RGB). There's one joker on amazon trying to flog one and doesn't seem to quite understand how selling works as they've consistently upped the price over a period of about five days, starting off at £120 then £131, £141 and now £179 with a £32 delivery charge on top.

A case to fit it in though? A difficult one, I've an eye on a Mastercase SL600M with a slight mod on the rear panel to create an air intake with a 120mm/140mm fan (Noctua, might as well keep it in the family ) bolted to it and a couple of 140mm exhausts up top.
