Review overour review unit, with a top-end 240Hz panel and 1TB SSD, sadly isn't being made available on UK shores.

For an expensive laptop that keyboard and plastic around it certainly looks cheap

Yeah. Why would a company send a review unit that isn't going to be available?
Other things:
TUF - isn't that supposed to be about durability? Flex in the display? Nah.
WASD in clear?? That looks awful. But "Armory Crate" config utility?!? urgh.
A 4 core processor in a "gaming" machine is now a farce.
"3700" - no, it isn't. It just isn't. It may use similar silly-cone but it can barely do 1080@60FPS. It's using the same branding and subtle background changes hidden in the tech specs to allow use of the 3700 brand with a chip that has nowhere near the performance.
Screen type - a waste of money when paired with such a GPU.
Excellent sequential speeds - no mention of the rather terrible random speeds.
That aesthetic reminds me of early 2000s everything-white awfulness
To answer some of your points:
It's just as annoying for us to receive samples that sometimes are not sold in the UK. However, the manufacturer oftentimes only has stock of units available in other countries. We take it in because we're interesting in the technology implementation and have international readers that may well benefit. Not ideal, of course, but this is the truthful answer.
I agree with the next six points. What's particularly galling is Nvidia's new mobile branding where a 3070 can be either poor or quite good depending upon implementation. We're likely to see more of these laptops throughout the summer, however, so it is something we have to get used ot.

Cheers for replying. I'm wondering if, given the huge swings in potential performance, the EU may step in here. We're used to CPUs being tuned for low power or higher performance but thats usually quite commensurate with the type of laptop you're buying. Nvidia is going too far here and it feels like their mid range card debacle all over again. Where the "1650" (if I remember rightly) could come with many different GPUs and configurations and very variable performance. To take this to its logical conclusion, you might as well put in something called "Nvidia GPU" and get no more descriptive about what you are buying.
It's hard enough for someone like me to look into the specs and figure out what level of performance this card provides but I can only imagine the minefield for present hunting parents, etc.
who makes a laptop in 2021 without a webcam? Hello? wfh international calling...
There is an argument for this. Most inbuilt webcams are awful. People who use them properly buy a decent one. That being said, you might as well say "we're not including iron sights on your gun because people who want sights buy way better ones". It's almost basic functionality these days. I can't imagine the BOM for a webcam and the extra processes for fitting it are much on a machine with all this silly styling.
Asus really have some nerves to use that pathetic CPU, it is an insta not buy for anyone with even a little bit of a knowladge
