Re: Intel Xeon Platinum 8380 Processor 2P (Ice Lake)
Yikes, so Intel basically got spanked in just about every test. Haven't seen Intel playing catchup like this since the days of the original Athlon!
Re: Intel Xeon Platinum 8380 Processor 2P (Ice Lake)
Still slower, worse value and less efficient in almost every measure compared to AMD. Better IPC but lower clocks thanks to their busted 10nm process. Unlike on desktop, they can't just push more juice into the silicon until the performance is where it needs to be

Actually, they can.
Dr. Evil's Antarctic base has plenty of cooling and the piranha tank needs to be kept quite warm.

I'm actually quite shocked. Intel's 10nm should be pretty good at this. The clocks aren't as high as desktop chips, so a process that works well for laptops should be good here.
I notice I can now order an AMD server from Dell. That's significant, and not something that happened in the Athlon days. If Intel's "Best friend money can buy" is going elsewhere, then I guess they can't see anything good on the horizon unlike last time.

If Dell are starting to support AMD offerings in the server space alongside everything else that goes alongside those in terms of support packages, that is very significant. It's not a small investment to be made for a business that has been inclined towards team blue for such a long time.

All that money for stock buyback had to come from somewhere, so maybe the Dell slush fund suffered?

First I heard about it was on Semi Accurate: https://www.semiaccurate.com/2021/03...d-amd-servers/
Interesting to note on there that this is a paper launch from Intel, Dell say volume parts are available in May.
Edit: Though I guess for a CPU that's 2 years late another 6 weeks won't matter much.
Re: Intel Xeon Platinum 8380 Processor 2P (Ice Lake)
Shouldn't the conclusion just say, don't bother with this and just buy an Epyc server?
Re: Intel Xeon Platinum 8380 Processor 2P (Ice Lake)
Intel like beating their chests with the so called "new instructions" unfortunately NO ONE CARES.

yes, but they want to still get review samples so they leave it to you to read between the lines.
How long until our intel sponsored fanboy arrives to tell us why this is actually a better product than Epyc? They've been surprisingly quiet so far!

I wish he had a friend called Bob.
Tbh, the reception of these parts has been pretty lukewarm at best.
I think Patrick over at STH did a really well rounded piece on why these are both good and not good (not bad but not good).

I work for a company that, unforunately, does care. There's a lot of money flying around in this industry and some of those new instructions are considered, by the company, to be core to getting their fair share of it.
Personally, I think there is some mileage to them. While AVX-512 register sizes may be obscene, the mask register and associated conditional instruction extensions have made my life significantly easier.
Also, AMD appear to be implementing those new instructions in their upcoming Zen 4 CPUs, so they must think they're important, too.

While they do seem to be pro-intel I think we can do without calling people fanboy's etc. Hexus is a welcoming site and we should aim to keep it that way :)

I'll happily retract when they reply to the question. Just look at their post history. It's only on threads relating to intel. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

I've seen it but doesn't mean we need to call people fanboys etc
