I think that the all-poweful 'REM' statement is - ultimately - one of the most powerful marketing tools
<unnamed company> releases a driver
(for example) and makes sure that there is text in the drive that indicates a bunch of class - leading features
They do so knowing that some smart**** journalist (
) will decode the file to see which products are about to be announced PLUS what the new feature sets will be
The journalist thinks "Blinder - I have a scoop !"
They publish
If the
<unnamed company> is really lucky, the story may even get a hefty dose of 'SLASHDOT' treatment
When other sites/mags include that 'info' in their reports, the manufacturer gets tons of global 3rd party endorsement for the product based on a feature set that
cannot possibly be supported by the product...
...ever...
...cos the technology is simply not there !
Sales go through the roof and they never had to lie*
* For the purpose of this rant, a 'lie' is where you actually print something on the box that cannot possibly happen because the hardware either (a) does not work or (b) never had the feature designed in to it in the first place. If you think that this is too harsh - let me know and I will change it !
