    He does have a point there.

    Some of the names are getting a bit of a mouthful now to pronounce, and I've got tongue-tied a few times and had to put my teeth back in to recite the names of some motherboards and graphics cards

    Just like Michael, I don't like to single a company out in this, but seeing as I've owned their products I think I'm entitled too. Gigabyte have possibly the worst naming scheme on the planet. GA7VAXP - what's that about?

    Guess mode = on

    G = Gigabyte
    A = Athlon
    7 = K7 (ie normal athlon)
    V = VIA chipset
    A = AGP
    XP = no idea at all

    Now that IS a guess...but I bet a lot of it's right

    I think Foxconn are probably the worst culprit, but that's irrelevant to me because I wouldn't even touch their motherboards with someone else's 10 foot bargepole.

    I think that the all-poweful 'REM' statement is - ultimately - one of the most powerful marketing tools

    <unnamed company> releases a driver (for example) and makes sure that there is text in the drive that indicates a bunch of class - leading features

    They do so knowing that some smart**** journalist () will decode the file to see which products are about to be announced PLUS what the new feature sets will be

    The journalist thinks "Blinder - I have a scoop !"

    They publish

    If the <unnamed company> is really lucky, the story may even get a hefty dose of 'SLASHDOT' treatment

    When other sites/mags include that 'info' in their reports, the manufacturer gets tons of global 3rd party endorsement for the product based on a feature set that cannot possibly be supported by the product...

    ...ever...

    ...cos the technology is simply not there !

    Sales go through the roof and they never had to lie*

    * For the purpose of this rant, a 'lie' is where you actually print something on the box that cannot possibly happen because the hardware either (a) does not work or (b) never had the feature designed in to it in the first place. If you think that this is too harsh - let me know and I will change it !

    Having worked for Gainward i have to say that their product descriptions are the longest anywhere. How about: Gainward PowerPack! Ultra/3500PCX XP VIVO-DVI-DVI Golden Sample...
