    HEXUS.reviews :: Sapphire Radeon X1800 GTO

    For just under ˜£170 where you can find it in stock in the UK -- *cough* eBuyer *cough* -- the Radeon X1800 GTO is an interesting proposition. On the one hand it's a hot, noisy board that's matched by 7600 GT performance wise, dulling its appeal, while on the other hand it's able to offer higher overall IQ if that's what you covet. Depends how much you crave the best looking pixels since that's where ATI beat NVIDIA these days.

    why didnt you guys check the overclocking potential as well? Also, whether the X1800GTO would actually unlock?

    sawyen

    i think the reason why they doid not overclock the video cards, and then test them is that not all chips of the same type come out on a waffer as equals. Most chips when you buy them are set to a little less then the speed they run at acceptible stable rates, and sell them at the appropriate price. if you compare 2 of the exact same type of chip 1 will most likely run a little better than the other when you overclock but are sold at the same price.

    they would have to purchase a whole shwack of each card and overclock em all and run tests on em all just to get an average on which one is better for overclocking.

    Gosh, I'm perfectly aware of those variables.. just that it'll be nice to see how far the hexus team manage to push the cards.. or any chance for it to unlock...

    okay - so they're both around the same price point - and the review does firmly suggest the purchase of the 7600gt -
    but which vendor offers the best bang for your buck?
    I've not bought a new gfx card in months, so I've got no idea who is supplying the quietest coolers and the best bundles -
    I see Scan is doing a wide range at around £115 - is this the best thing to go for, or am i being as mad as a box of frogs?

    Rys, I like the detail in the specification page.

    I'd only quibble about the Texture Processing entry, which states that there are 12 FP32 address units. Since they're not dedicated units (shared with the first MADD), I'd argue that they're not there at all. Only a minor point.

    Yeah, G73's first sub-ALU can't issue a math op while it textures. I'll make a note about that on the spec page. Cheers!

    As for those asking why we didn't overclock it or trying to unlock it, sadly I simply didn't have the time. If I can squeeze it in one day I will.

    thanks for the update, and I wish David well in his international relations, its sounds really sweet. I wish I could try the same thing, but for that I would have to actually fancy men to be in with a chance; albeit if I was, I hear it has worked in the past for those women who think male body parts are sexy rather than comical.
    thanks and best wishes to you both
