I know they're obviously needed to fund the site, but why do they have to be plain crappy looking ads which are just plain white with blue links and black text? (I'm talking about the ones in the top right hand corner of each page)

Dunno why, but they seem to be more annoying than 'normal' adds.

:edit: I meant annoying in the sense that they lower the graphic design of the site. (i.e. they're not as pretty )

I think the ads are on a cycle - I'm guessing that the google add is the default one.

I'd expect it to change to nice pretty crucial etc. ones shortly.

I'm sure Az or David will clarify this.

Google is just being used as a holding ad since we don't want to sit here and sell ads all day rather we would prefer to let the companies pick what they do.

If you want to pay us a large quantity of money per month to have nice graphical ads put up then we'd be happy to take your money. Especially if you can get a deal with Playboy

Last time we had graphical ones people moaned that they were not nice ads and that they didn't like the colour... How about people learn that this site is not a charity and has costs to cover... If you want it to go subs based thats fine with me - will save me a heap of work.

I mentioned nothing about this being a charity, I know adverts are needed to pay for the site, I said that above. I was just commenting on their appearence as personally I don't think they look good compared to the new look of Hexus.

I didn't mean to offend, so sorry if I did.

Valid point David he is not saying to remove the ads he is only commenting on their less than glamorous look, which I personally agree with, he did not say that you have no right to get payment for the great services that you provide here. It would be easy to get a false impression of you from an answer like that David, you dont do yourself justice.

We (and practically every other company on the web that uses ads) have no control over what is provided as an advert by a company. As far as possible the ads will be targetted to the user community of the site but ultimately it is a source of revenue and if we have to put ads up there to sell coconut milk moisturising lotion in order to keep the forums up then we will. What we will not tolerate is people criticising the adverts in a public forum as it ends up with companies withdrawing ads as they realise that the user community is against them. Therefore I am asking; firmly; that we have no more negative feedback on ads in this forum. If you have a strong issue you wish to raise then notify an administrator via pm. Otherwise keep it to yourself.

Well, I wasn't aware of the fact that you have no control over these ads so I take back my comments. In fact you might as well delete this thread because what I said is obviously being taken in the wrong context.

    I shall apologise again. Sorry.

No need for an apology as there were no guidelines available for you to read, something I will try to remedy. Thanks for acting in a responsible manner, it is much appreciated

I know ill be accussed of stirring or bein a troll or whatever but let me get this straight we are not to criticise compaines who advertise on Hexus, what does that mean exactly, does it extend to negative reviews of advertisers products, eg if someone feels a Mesh system is poor can he say so on the forums. Also surely this policy of no negative feed back to adverts undermines editorial independence and reviews.

just want to know what we can and can't say about products or the companies that sponsor Hexus.

    cheers

You can comment on companies if you want although anything that is likely to result in Hexus being targetted with a lawsuit will be removed and the person's account dealt with accordingly.

As stated though, we will not tolerate people criticising the adverts on this site. I never once stated you couldn't criticise a company. After all, we offer one of the leading online retailer ratings systems at http://users.hexus.net and it wouldn't be of much use if people couldn't make negative comments.

I trust this is a clear enough statement

right thin i gotya, no critising the actual existance of adverts but we can say what we like (within the libel laws) about advertising companies and their products, fair enough.

No you can't - you are allowed your views, but I will not tolerate the 'slagging' off of companies who fund this site.

I personally don't see the problem with Google ads. Although some modifications need to be made to sites so the google ads can successfully index the site to present relative adverts, its worth it in the long run.

A click means money for hexus which for the largest of sites run into thousands of pounds per day. The adverts when served correctly cut with the images and get the message across about why you should follow that link.

Many thousands of web sites now use this google system, you can't escape it. Besides compared to most magazines, a little advert at the top of the page or at the side is hardly going to cause you to slit your wrists?

Now quit moaning and support the site whos bandwidth you guys eat (in rather huge amounts).
