You need to clear your cookies, it happens with hotmail as well at times.
To clear your Safari browser cookies, tap on the Settings icon in the home screen. From here, scroll the screen down until you find the Safari option and tap on it.
Within the Safari settings screen which slides over, look toward the bottom for the Clear Cookies button and tap it. A little window will pop up asking you to confirm the action. To clear your cookies, tap on the button that says Clear Cookies. Otherwise, tap the Cancel button to keep your cookies

i was having this problem when i first started using safari and the forums.
I had to select Always accept cookies instead of "only sites i navigate to" for some strange reason. damn you safari!

Thanks (most of you!) but it stil doesn't work! Very annoying.

Safari is stupid like this.
Once you login you get redirected back to the main page via Javascript. Safari doesn't count a Java redirect as you navigating there. I guess its to stop cookies from advert sites and the like, but causes more hassle than its worth.

That could be the problem then, it doesn't like the redirect. Any way around it? Or am I without mobile hexus?

Doesn't go to the redirection screen, just straight back to the forum. Stupid thing!

I got my iPhone on Saturday, and cant connect to the forums either
does the same on my viewty too
