Automatically lock threads older than a year...
... except for people with more than 100 posts... rarely something useful can be added, but usually some n00bs register and with their first post they do a batman.
Re: Automatically lock threads older than a year...
what's wrong with new uses posting in old threads? If they want to spam they will spam anyway.

Some people sign up especially to post in old thread. Not to spam, just because they don't know better....
Re: Automatically lock threads older than a year...
it is always better to post in an existing thread than to start a new one :P

But those are not exclusive alternatives. Its better nothing is posted rather than someone registering to batman a thread from the 1940s

If the content is relivant to the thread and useful, then I do not agree.
Even someone posting in an old thread to say "thanks" as it fixed their problem - that's a new potential member there.
Spammers posts are deleted and the thread drops back to its proper position so I don't really see a major issue?

Just because curent members have read it and had their say, it doesn't mean that a new membver wouldnt want to contribute.
They may even add something that no-one already here has thought of.
Re: Automatically lock threads older than a year...
I agree if that was ever likely to happen... but can anyone link me a 1+ year batman that has given a new significant contribution...

Possibly, but this is impossible to measure. I guess if its fixed their problem, they might join up anyway because they will realise what a helpful bunch we all are :D

Some members do not notice that it has been batmaned and would type a serious reply which may be wasting their time....
Its not a major problem, its just an idea. Some other forums lock 30 day+ old threads and it works for them... I think 1 year is fairer given the scope of this forum
Re: Automatically lock threads older than a year...
I'm with SiM tbh, going back over the amount of thread which have been revived after 4+ years, I don't think there has been a single case where anything new and useful has been contributed...

Yay, Stoo agrees with me :)
Even if 1 year is too little. 2 year and older threads can certainly be locked.
Maybe you guys can suggest this to David/admins and see what they think

well no one can link me to a useful bat bump...?
at least we got a nice post from stew from this bat bump
edit: made a poll. Lets hear the people's voice :)
Re: Automatically lock threads older than a year...
SiM is the rights.
What happens is some right n00b turns up, then bumps a thread from the late Devonian period, to say something inane, then I come along, don't realise it's an old thread that noone cares about now, and waste my time replying to it.

Sorry mate, but I'm not going through 1000's of threads to try and find one :D
If it gets bumped and its spam / a useless post, hit the RTM button and we'll delete the posts.
I'm certainly not a huge fan of it at the moment, but I'll have a think about it.

The fact that you need to go through 1000's of bat-bumps to possibly find one says something ;)

You need to find the "bat-bumped" threads first though which is the issue. Not the checking of them once found.
Don't get me wrong, I have little doubt that you're right - more often than not, it'll not be a good contribution / spam. I'm just not a fan of locking threads unless they really have to be :)
As above, I'll have a think about it as I'm 50/50 on it atm.
Re: Automatically lock threads older than a year...
Is there any way to add some code which would flag an old thread to whoever is trying to post?
i.e. if someone presses the reply button and the difference between today's date and the last post is over a year you get a little popup telling them that it's an old thread and asking them to okay it.
