girly forum

the point lynni was trying to make was that she just doesnt see why the computer chat has to leak out into general discussion. Its a bit excessive when u've got all the other forums to talk about computers in.as i've already said twice (but somehow people just seem to ignore the point of my posts - try reading them...) i know hexus is a computer site, i know the forums are predominantly computer related, that ISNT what we have a problem with, i for one read some of the others, BUT my point (which i've said all along) is, can we keep the computer chat to a minimum in GD? it's the only place for us not-so-serious-computer-enthusiasts to stay sane! :p I might read these forums, but i dont think, talk, eat, drink, sleep computers! I find them interesting (as i'm sure a fair few people do) but not to the point where i have to talk about them 24/7.

Also, as i've said in previous posts, could we nt COMPROMISE? This isnt a discussion about having a girly forum anymore, because the connection lynni and i were trying to make, wasnt made. Its a discussion about keeping GD light hearted and *try* to keep it relatively computer tech free?

If anyone else carries on ranting about why the girly forum should or shouldnt go ahead, or why it will or wont work, you havent read this post. Please read it THEN post.

GD is for all manner of non-serious threads jokes, fun etc. Many users stay out of there because there is a fair bit of spam as it is ;)

What this boils down to is that you want more girl friendly threads- start more then :confused

By girly forum I assume you mean some sort of area for lifestyle type threads and so on and if so then use the General Discussion board. Just because there are more computer related threads in there at the moment shouldn't stop you from creating threads that interest you. If there turn out to be a large number of threads on a particular topic then that would be the justification for the creation of a sub-forum.

No-one in any of there threads has clearly defined what they would want a 'girly forum' for. All they've said is could it be less technical which is what General Discussion is for. Therefore either the more technical threads get moved to more appropriate forums (and if you want this to happen then speak to the GD mod) or you give a clearly defined statement as to what you need a new forum for. Simply saying there's too many technical threads in there isn't enough I'm afraid.

So for the moment the answer is no unless I'm overruled :)

thats what i was suggesting.

as i've said... in my last post, the post before that, and the one before that, it'd not so much a new girly forum we want, its just to de-technify the GD forum.

The level of techy posts in GD is defined by the people who use it... so if all you lasses use it and input some fun and interesting chat it won't be all "how many PCs do you own", "how many graphics cards have u burnt"...etc.

General discussion is called that because you can post anything in there, looking at it now there are 7 threads in there related to computers out of the 25 on the first page, considering this forum is nearly totally popualted by "geeks" thats not too horrible a ratio is it?

Unfortunatly there's always gonna be a mix in there because this isn't just a public forum its one thats run in tandem with a technology review site. If you don't like some of the threads start new ones that you wanna see. I'm not saying you guys are wrong in what you say but there ain't much we can do to change the readership of the forums.

Take out the techy threads that do interest the majority its has to be said and we are left with...

What Male-Only forum?

After the crash, I set up most of the forums here and the access permissions. I CERTAINLY didn't set up anything to which which access was determined by gender. I've just used the Admin panel to inspect ALL available forums, and there are NONE that are limited to males only. That's not to say there aren't forums that don't have any females able to access them - there are : certain forums that are only available to the Moderating team, for instance. The only reason there aren't females able to access them is that we don't have any female moderators (unless someone's keeping a likkle secret about themselves :D) and THAT is not a conscious decision either.

That is not to say there are not private forums - there are. Access criteria vary. The Mod Lounge is one such forum. Many boards have such private forums. I know one board that had forums where access was restricted to bona-fide accredited students only. And many boards have gaming sections where access is limited to Clan members. Or to paying subscribers. Beyond that, though, I'm not going to comment further on them other than to say that gender is not a criteria for access to any of our forums.

As for the contents of GD, it's awkward.

If a thread is clearly more relevant to another specific forum, a Mod will move it to the relevant forum. Other than that, we try to interfere as little as possible, because to do so would be regarded as 'censorship'. Sometimes there are threads that are borderline - could be moved or left. Then it's pot luck asto what happens, but my guess is they'll usually get left - if for no otherreason that that people sometimes get upset when threads are moved - it's not unknown for it to be taken personally.

I suspect that the reason there is little 'girly' content, and plenty of 'techy' or computer-oriented chat is two-fold :-

- we are a technical forum
- the majority if our members aren't girls.

I haven't discussed this with the other Mods, so this is a personal view, not board policy BUT my attitude is that we only create new forums if there is either a clearly demonstrable demand for them, or it fits in with our strategy for board expansion. The latter point usually relates to technical areas we are missing out on.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a girly forum (private or otherwise, though it will never be entirely private as Admins will have access even if not all Mods do) BUT I currently see no need for it. I'm open to convincing if a case can be made, though.

I honestly can't see it happening. This is a tech forum, most of the people here are blokes, and geeky blokes at that.....
