Shopping Links by Skimlinks
I've started noticing these appearing in a few places around the forums - when did they start up, and are they really necessary? They're particularly confusing in the hardware forum, where people often make suggestions of specific components and having autogenerated links in there as well might make it appear that someone is suggesting a product when they're not.
Any way to remove / disable them? Or are they a vital part of the "pay for Hexus' servers" fund? ;)
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
It's a necessary evil for paying the bills, IE the cost of running the site & forum, as you guessed. No way I know of removing them I'm afraid.
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
I will find out if there's a way of restyling the links to make them more obvious as not "normal" links.
However, I'll have to make some inquiries.
The service we're using is experimental.
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
OK guys, thanks for the information :D
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
I've not noticed them, can anyone link to an example?
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
Was about to create a new thread on this, glad to see someone finding it an inconvenience. At least they're not popups too. Any word on Skimlink restyling yet Steve, please?
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
No word yet, partly due to the fact that I hardly ever see them, although I did see some today!
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
I've now had an opportunity to analyse them properly and, although in the current testing release of the software, I don't have complete control over their appearance via CSS, I have updated them to appear in a different colour to standard links.
Hopefully when Skimlinks release the full version, I will be able to do something a little more subtle, but still sufficiently informative.
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
Thanks Steve, good to know this hasn't been forgotten :)
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
Ack, yet another advert to ignore :(
Can't Hexus just offer an ad-free subscription pretty please???
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
Has anyone got a thread that has some examples in it?
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
I've not seen any at all since this thread appeared

Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
Anyone else getting US links?
I have Amazon.com and newegg.com on that page. as well as ebay, which may well be a US auction.
My IP resolves to somewhere around Leeds and is definitely identified by other sites as being UK based (even though it is a large US oil company that owns the IP)
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
I'm getting misco.co.uk and amazon.co.uk :)
Re: Shopping Links by Skimlinks
and im getting PC World :p
and im also getting, that when i refresh the page, different skimlinks appear on different things. sometimes theres 2 on that page TAKTAK linked, sometimes 4, or anwhere inbetween. and they point to different sites each time i click refresh. all UK links BTW.
