The new forums...

OK, before I start having a moan I better say that in general I love Hexus. It's one of the friendliest and helpful forums around and the people are great.

But...

I don't like all these new forums. By seperating all of the different subjects into very specialised forums, all you're doing is seperating the people who visit Hexus into different groups. We should be one, big, happy community rather than fragmented parts. I personally don't see the reason for doing it, I really don't think there's enough traffic on Hexus to warrant it either.

Also the names of the forums. Do we need HEXUS in front of every forum name? And "HEXUS Fidelity"? It's not quite as obvious and descriptive as the old name, is it?

I agree completly , I already know I'm at hexus I dont need every forum title telling me :)

Yea im not to keen on the new layout, I aggree with the Hexus fidelity, reminds me of arguments I had with certain peeps @ OCS when they wanted to set things out like this, theres proper names for things then theres names that people will recodnise.
Just looks very cluttered to me at the moment.

You can please all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but never all of the people all of the time.

The HEXUS is there to ensure that our brand name is promoted in search engine rankings so it stays. In general we've had a positive outlook on the changes. That's not to say they might need some tweaking (we are open to suggestions for the Fidelity forum). There is more than enough traffic to justify this. The separation should make it easier for people to post in the correct forums and also to find information they need. Picture yourself as a new user and it may make more sense. We're not trying to alienate our existing members, we're just trying to improve.

Keep your suggestions coming and we'll continue tweaking. You should also be aware that these changes are in line with some main site development work that is in the pipeline and affect more than the forums. Please remember that the forums are a part of HEXUS as a whole even if you only use them and not the any of the other variety of services we offer

I personally like the new layout as people specialise in certain areas so they will be in a more closer community after a while.

Although I do notice that you do not have a sports chat forum :) I was wondering why this was not here - not all PC users do not like footy, cricket etc and I'm sure some good debates could be had there :)

Feel free to start threads in General Discussion and if we get a sufficient number to warrant a sub-forum then it will be taken into consideration

The old "Software - Open Source and Windows" is now "HEXUS Operating Systems", I assume this is still where we should post regarding applications and general software issues despite the name?

Might it make more sense to have the top level as "[Hexus] Software" and have sub-forums for Linux and Microsoft under there?
(I would have said Apple too, but there is a top-level forum for them as they are a different hardware platform too, so it seems pointless.)

The way people read the forums varies hugely from person to person I should think, but personally... I think that the GAMING section should be at the bottom of the "Core" area, as this isn't JUST techy stuff, but entertainment too, and therefore gets a bit lost in the middle of everthing else.
Also, I would put the "Interactive" area last of all.

Thanks for explaining the HEXUS thing, that does actually make sense.

I still think there are too many forums though. The problem is that people are lazy and won't check all of the forums, all of the time. So, when someone posts a question in one of the less popular forums it won't be seen by as wide an audience as possible. What happens if a new user comes along to Hexus, asks a question and gets no replies (or very few)? I doubt they will be returning.

I understand that there's a balance to be made between too many and too few forums, but personally I would be looking for have around 5-6 computer/hardware forums and about the same number of non-hardware forums.

It's all a matter of personal taste though. :)
