could a subforum be started for...
hello all!
I would like to ask if a section could be created for individuals with disabilites. I do not know if there are enough people here who are disabled and who have a passion for computers wether it be multi-media or games. a disabled forum would help bring peope out and get them to socialize more. the forum would not be a place for a poor me attitude or pity party. it would be to help suport one another and encourage interaction in the rest of the forum.
just a thought.
have a great day!

Sensitive topic... I'll go first shall I? ;)
I'm not convinced. You don't declare your disability during sign up, ie nobody knows who is/isn't disabled. How would a disabled sub-forum 'bring people out and get them to socialise more'? I'm not sure it's even a problem. What it would do is single out those members who are disabled and I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing but I'd lean towards the latter.
Re: could a subforum be started for...
Hexus forums seem to be split according to what the topic that is being discussed, not the person behind the discussion. So even the parenting sub-forum with it's call to parents exists for the discussion of things relevant to parenting ("The purpose of this forum is to share the trials and tribulations of your parenting life")
So calling for a section *for* individuals with disabilities is probably not the right approach. You could perhaps instead ask for a section about the discussion of disabilities or issues disabled people have, and if there's a large enough portion of Hexus readership that it's relevant to then I'm sure such a board could be created.
But please know that Hexus welcomes all, and being an internet forum you can share as little or as much about yourself as you like. Disabilities are absolutely no barrier to interaction at all, and you could just as easily discuss the issues in the general forum or other relevant forum as you see fit.
That's just my opinion though - good suggestion. Maybe some other people with disabilities could post their opinions?
Re: could a subforum be started for...
Bad idea imo, I'm not disabled but one of my children is and I think having/needing a forum that would make you stand from any other able bodied person out just because you have a disability is wrong and inappropriate, the net is full of forums that specialize in disabilities
Re: could a subforum be started for...
There are other websites and forums for this as well.
Doesn't belong in a computer based website and forum.
Re: could a subforum be started for...
It also brings into question what you consider a disability? Would my psoriasis be considered enough to use this forum or would I have to be missing a limb or have impaired motor function? I have to agree with the apparent general consensus that this is the wrong place for this type of subforum, because apart from discriminating against the disabled, it would then discriminate against the not quite disabled or the fully abled.
I think...
Anyways, If you want a frank and open discussion about technological aids for disabled people, their use in daily life and perhaps what tech companies should be looking at to help in future, then I am all for it.
It could be wheelchair modding (theres a girl at my work with tripped out wheels and colour scheme, and why the hell not), full body prothsetic aids, or just gadgets that make things a great deal easier for folks that have to deal with ordinary things in ordinary ways. As I work in a call centre, there are a fair few folks in there that are in w/chairs and at least 2 that I know that have stunted limbs for want of a better term. One lad has worked there longer than me, has a special keyboard that is raised to his chin as his arms are particularly short, so typing is a bit of a trial for him. Theres another lad recently started with 1 arm thats not just stunted but twisted (as is his sense of humour :)) Now I wont go into their personal details for 2 reasons, 1. I dont know them that well, and 2. Its not my place to, but although 1 guy has technical aids to help him do his job, the other prefers to not use them, as he does most things perfectly well one handed. Bearing in mind we are taking calls, typing reports, troubleshooting, transferring etc etc. A call centre is not a disabled friendly environment unless a great deal of work is put into making it so.
So , in short, a discussion on tech aids and uses - Yes
A separate subform - No
Just my opinion tho, and I value yours too Ironleg, so feel free to make it :)

Thanks for the reply!
after thinking about it you are right. this could open a can of worms real quick as well as what term of disability would be used. I should have put more thought into it before posting.I apologize if I offended anyone as it was not my intent. can an admin please delete this thread.
Thanks!
Re: could a subforum be started for...
I'm also wheelchair user, I've been a member here for a while and have not felt the need for a separate section for "us".
Happy with the status quo.
However, if any other disabled member wants to drop me a PM to discuss anything, I'm happy to receive:)
I don't feel any need to delete or close the thread though unless you insist.
Re: could a subforum be started for...
I tend to agree, if there were more folk with related issues - maybe it would be a good idea for when they wanted to talk about certain issues and how they overcome them i.e. such asmy issues with button mashing or whatever else

No offence taken by anyone I hope!
We are always receptive to new ideas, and we do run forums for special interest groups, such as gaming, case modding, self build.
However most if these activities are open to all, and while someone's physical or mental ability may affect which of those activities they may undertake, that is secondary to the main purpose.
BUT that isn't to say that HEXUS or, more importantly, its members, aren't sensitive to the needs of members with some form of disability, and I'm sure that a query on (for example) 'Does anyone know of a keyboard suitable for (say) rheumatoid arthritis?' it would get a sympathetic response, but that is different from a special interest group forum, and there are other websites that are dedicated to specific disabilities, and probably of more use than a special interest group here.

I have to agree that I should have approached this topic differently. I was curious as to how many individuals where disabled and could talk to one another as to how things are going and upcoming hardware like . is windows 8 going to have the Xbox connect capability and how is it compared to the The Leap motion controller. would a new WII controller interface be a better controller for someone who is in a wheel chair or limited mobility.what is the preferred keyboard, mouse, and mouse pad type(( hard, fiber, glass, etc...) does everyone use and do you use a Xbox game controller, joystick, flight controllers, steering wheel.would the connect or the leap save money from trying to buy a monitor that is touch and 3d? what bu-ray do you recommend for your build, internal, external, or internal in an enclosure. basically what do you do to get your game on, what hardware, why, and if disabled why it works for you and suggestions.
Personally I am really Interested in the leap controller and wondering if it will take over the need for a touch monitor and just leave a good 3d monitor / 3d tv choice. Right now my systems down so I will beat the bushes on Craigslist to see if I can get a 980 amd and up or a 2600k intell 1155 used. . but the point I was trying to make is what works, what doesn't, and above all make new friends.i hope to make a lot of new friends here.
