Hexus Forums - Pop-up or not?

Hi - can someone please explain why sometimes when I click the Forums button on the main hexus.net page does it open in a new browser window and sometimes it uses the same window? It seems completely random as to whether it opens a new window or not

    Or is it just me?

Yeah this is something that happens to me in Firefox. In IE it always seems to open in a new window.

Also in firefox when you click a persons name and click view public profile it opens up another window but also moves the original window to the users profile. Strange.

IIRC there are 2 forum links, one opens in a new window and the other does not, also if you click the link before the page has loaded fully it will use the same window for some reason

In order to comply with the standards I don't use the target="_blank" parameter on URLs which is the old way of ensuring that a link opens in a new window. This is beacuse the target parameter is being deprecated and means that the HTML for the page will not validate as XHTML with the W3C validation tool (there are other elements on the site that don't validate as well so no need to bring them up again, I know what they are).

Therefore the link uses rel="external" and I have some JavaScript that traps for this and ensures they open in a new window. However, for some reason in Firefox due to the way it loads a page, if the page has not finished it will not allow the JavaScript to run and hence when you click on the link it opens in the same window. If the page has finished it will open in a new window as intended. The same goes for any other popup type links e.g. user profiles.

It's not an ideal solution but there's not much I can do about the way Firefox decides to render a page

Thanks for the explanation - I guess sometimes I'm more patient than others

Ah that explains it . Anyway you can get around the problem in Firefox by control clicking or middle mouse clicking to open the link in a new tab.

Why not just leave it to open as normal.. If a user wants it in a new window they can right click and do it that way... you dont need to force new windows on them...
One thing that I hate about most sites is you dont even get the chioce of how you view them.

Because we want to hae the forums open in a new window, they are separate areas of HEXUS and we would like to ensure you don't miss any news posts etc by clicking on the forums link. We have had this discussion before if you search the forum you will find it.
