Classified - Mobile Phones
Just wondering if this rule will ever get updated as it seems that this rule was made +10 years ago when people were trying to flog stolen Nokia 3310s with no charger.
Mobile phone world has moved on and is more like a computer than a phone. Some people including many in this community are swapping phones for the latest model every year and I imagine that they would much rather sell their previous phones on here than having to deal with places like Ebay.

True, they're now flogging stolen iPhones with no charger :p
Re: Classified - Mobile Phones
People will still try to flog stolen phones regardless of spec change.
Although strides have been made in making stolen phones useless (IMEI blocking) I understand why HEXUS doesn't want to get involved, greater chance of dodgy-ness I'd imagine.
Just check eBay for listings that contain the phrase

I'm not an expert and it won't work in the UK but definitely will work outside of UK
to get an idea of how big the problem still is.
Re: Classified - Mobile Phones
We (HEXUS staff, mods and admins) regularly review things like this, and AFAIK, this was discussed during the recent changes to the site.
I think a resounding NO was the result.
Being a Mod over at AV Forums too, in the Mobile Phone classifieds area no less, it can be VERY tricky to make sure it all goes well. And sometimes it doesn't.
Which is possibly why HEXUS doesnt.
Re: Classified - Mobile Phones
I would tend to agree with the decision of the mods and admins. It puts Hexus in a more obvious potential position of liability, not worth it.
Re: Classified - Mobile Phones
When I was a mod / admin and we looked into it, a lot of it came down to IMEI blocking. It's all too easy to sell a phone and then report it as lost / stolen and have it blocked.
There was also issues of liability that were talked about....in the end it was a case of going with what was the most sensible at that time. I don't think anything would have changed recently to change this, but it's one for the current team to look at.
Also keep in mind that every other thread seems to break the FS rules in some way (which is almost unbelievable considering how few there is at HEXUS), like no photo / trust. I'm not sure phones should be sold on here given the inability of a lot of people to not follow a few basic rules, even after clicking the 'I agree to the terms and conditions' with a hyperlink to the rules when selling things :D
Re: Classified - Mobile Phones
This is something that we keep under review, and as g8ina and agent have said, there were good reasons why this was implemented at the time, and things haven't changed so much that we think it can be changed. That isn't to say that it won't happen in future, but it isn't something I'd like to forecast.
The HEXUS role in the FS threads is to provide as an introduction facility, and while we have rules designed to give some measure of assurance to prospective buyers and sellers, any transaction is a purely private sale between two individuals, and subject to the over aching principle "Let the Buyer Beware".
Very few transactions (as far as we know) have problems, testimony to the good faith of the HEXUS community. Where there are issues, we can sometimes contact one party to give them a nudge, but that is all we can do, apart from remove someone's access to FS, or even the sole site.
Sadly mobile phones are still seen as high value and attractive items to con artists - we regularly delete spam offering to sell new phones, and our fear is that we might attract potential con artists into FS.
The protection measures we have might deter, and they wouldn't last long on the boards once detected, but we currently feel that the risk of even one member being conned in this way is too much - not only for the individual, the main consideration, but also for the reputation of the HEXUS FS forums as a safer place for eligible members to trade.
