I believe that only appears if you click on, or hover over, an advertising link (which are green with a double-underline). I know a couple of years back being signed in to the main site stopped advert links appearing on the articles, but I think that went with the last major site redesign. At least Hexus doesn't autoplay audio adverts when you load pages, which one or two other tech sites do...
I guess advertising is the price we pay for hexus content, but I have to admit I hadn't seen one of those full-screen pop-up ones before I went to check on your post. It's a bit .... intrusive .... perhaps, but I had to deliberately hover over the link for about 5 seconds before it appeared, so if you just a void the links it shouldn't be a problem....? Hexus have to pay for the servers somehow, and what other options are there? Charge the readers? Take money from tech companies for favourable reviews?
Personally I can still see and take notice of adverts without them being as intrusive as that. There was a set of guidelines for internet adverts somewhere which I thought was nice - and if you adhered to it then add-ons like adblockplus would allow your adverts to be shown by default - that's got to be worth a bit of revenue compared to advertise like the one in the screenshot!
Guidelines here:
https://adblockplus.org/en/acceptable-ads#criteria
All I did was load the site and it popped up, It may be the case that the mouse curser was over a link at the time but these type of ads usually go away when you move away from the link.
Yeah, as I say that kind of ad is definitely intrusive. I'm sure someone from the business side of Hexus will drop in in a bit to provide the official line - obviously while I'm a forum mod I don't have any involvement in the business side of things - was just voicing some thoughts. The full screen take over ad does seem to be coming increasingly popular at the minute, but it took quite a while for that one to pop up for me: wonder if there's some difference between browsers for how quickly they appear (when I hovered over the link there was a progress bar that took around 5 seconds to fill, and moving away from the link at any point during the process cancelled the loading before the ad even appeared). Sounds like your experience of that ad was quite different to mine....
I am using Chrome btw, Lets see what the Hexus line is, I may just have been unlucky :)
I'd agree with that assessment. Actually I'm seeing more of these slide-in green "discount coupon" ads which are a real pain in the posterior. These seem to come from "ads.dfgio.com/coupons" and cause all kind of havoc. Strange thing is that these don't seem to be anywhere near as obnoxious for Firefox or IE use. And don't get me started on the random music movie clips - very annoying. :censored:
Hexus?
Hey - I am looking in to this - I can only assume you clicked a Intelitxt links (green underlined)
Let me see what I can find - I think the ad is unreasonable either way
Thats what am thinking I dont remember clicking I just loaded the page.
Not happened since though all seems to be good now.
Just to update on this: I just had the exact same ad when I clicked the link to the Origin Black Friday Sale story. No mouseover as I literally right clicked and opened in a new tab - ad looked to be on the window as it loaded.
Annoyingly I've tried to replicate so I can check to see if I can grab the URL loading and it's not happening now :)
Got it here by hovering on the second green link on the monitor review. Covers the whole window !
