Forced to instal ad blocker
I know Hexus requires adverts but over last few months I have noticed that adverts appear irrespective of whether I hover over some green underlined text or click on it - they just appear as long as the mouse is somewhere within vicinity.
It is really annoying and it has forced me to do something I swore I would never do, instal an ad blocker specifically to get rid of them.
If I want to see adverts I will click on them, or hover. If I do neither then no adverts should appear
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
Thank you for the comment. It has been noticed and is being looked at.
As you rightly point out, the forums require an income to keep going, and that is either advertising revenue or subscription.
Advertising is probably the better route, but has to be a balance. Your feedback is welcomed.
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
I am one of those that don't mind paying a few pound per month not to have adverts.
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
I spend enough on over priced subscription services, which in some cases don't even remove the adverts.
I'd rather just have the adverts, and I find they're quite well placed on Hexus. Non intrusive and non bothersome, yet also obvious to see.
The only websites I block are ones with annoying adverts that dramatically reduce load times.
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
Can't say I've had any issues with adverts appearing when not hovering over or being to close to the green text...never been an issue for me, especially not with Hexus
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
For me, theres 4 classes of advert.
The "classic" banner adverts, displayed on the page, being quiet and non-intrusive. These are fine with me.
The noisy advert, these are the ones using some sort of video that starts playing on its own. Really dislike these, not all that common.
The pop-over advert, they appear as a layer over the site, usually closable but easily mis-clickable. Annoying, but rare.
The "green link" advert, that unwanted green hyperlink. Do my very very best to block these always.
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
i've noticed it a lot recently, i put it down to a browser issue rather than Hexus itself tbh.
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
I'm having the green hyperlink popup issue too, open a Hexus article immediately I get a pop up without having the mouse near the link, most annoying :(
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
noticing it more now, close the first link and the second pops up immediately :(
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
I didn\'t notice this on my computer as I already gave adblock installed but trying to navigate the forums on my phone is virtually impossible. Ads coming up everywhere and I\'m not even clicking the links.
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
I filter hexus as well, I browse with a filter first and allow some acceptable ads later policy. I don\'t let the pop-up ads through and Ghostery does a great job of selectively blocking them for me. I would prefer if Hexus did away with those ads entirely, they make the experience of using the site worse in my opinion.

Do you still have this issue? I browse without an adblocker on phone and don't have any noticeable pop-ups on the Hexus Forum or main site.
In general I don't mind the ads on Hexus - its the only site where the ads are relevant, and have clicked on a few from time to time. They tend to be safe as well, you end up on the genuine manufacturers website not some dodgy 3rd party trying to sell you stuff. The forum hover ones can be annoying at times, but its not been obtrusive as late.
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
I'm still having this issue. Doing my head in. HAte the green links, they are rarely useful, half the time they pick up half phrases and link to something entirely unrelated. How do I go about blocking them?
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
I found that Ghostery blocks them well, they seem to come from SkimLinks on the forums and Vibrant Ads on the website.
To block them: install Ghostery, setup it up how you would like (can block everything or almost nothing) and then when on the Hexus website click the Ghostery icon and toggle blocking for SkimLinks by clicking the blue slider button. That will set SkimLinks to be blocked globally, repeat for anything else you want to block.

Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
thanks mate, will be downloading that tonight! :)
Re: Forced to instal ad blocker
After a few weeks the adblocker now filters out those ads I hate. Basically block anything from Vibrant Media - perilously close to malware IMO.
Come on Hexus remove the Vibrant Media crap and maybe the rest of us will allow your other ads
