Getting spammed via my Hexus signup email
I'm getting spammed. Not exactly a shocker, but the reason it got through my spam filter is that it was sent to my Hexus account email.
My email account allows me to create individual addresses for various things in this format: Anything@Myname.ISP.co.uk. I can anything I want before the @ to create addresses specific to a given site/forum.
Obviously, I never re-use these emails anywhere else, so how did the spammers get it? Has Hexus had a data breach?
Re: Getting spammed via my Hexus signup email
I’m not aware of any data breaches (but I’m not an employee)
It could be that it is a lucky guess or some dictionary attack. Workaround is to change the email address you use for HEXUS to something more complex.
Sorry I can’t be more helpful, but I will bring your post to the attention of the devs.
Re: Getting spammed via my Hexus signup email
Short answer is yes there was a security breach: https://forums.hexus.net/general-dis...ng-forums.html
I would advise everyone to use a unique email address and unique password on all sites, and change the email/password when notified of any breach.
Re: Getting spammed via my Hexus signup email
I remember the notification at the time but three years before they start spamming me?
Re: Getting spammed via my Hexus signup email
These emails go onto lists - I’d have thought unusual but not impossible that there could be a delay. If your email has not been changed since the breach, then it’s out there on some spammer distribution list as a valid address.
Re: Getting spammed via my Hexus signup email
There has not been a data breach, bar the one detailed above.
In regards to the email - you may have opt'd in to a competition or something on HEXUS where you authorised the company to contact you.
Is it just spam or a specific campaign which has hit you? - drop me an email david@ and I can follow up and help.
cheers
David

I don't opt in to mail from third parties - it may be nothing, I was just surprised to see it so I thought I'd ask.
It's the "Earn £50k a month working from home" variety - nothing particularly targeted.

Well we don't release or re-sell anyones information (we value our relationship with you more) so I am confident it's nothing and I am personally for any headaches caused.
Re: Getting spammed via my Hexus signup email
I wasn't implying Hexus was doing anything nefarious with my data - I rarely see any spam so it was just sufficiently surprising that I thought it best to check if there was an issue.

Totally chap - appreciate being asked, that's what we are here for!
Re: Getting spammed via my Hexus signup email
I have the opposite problem. I keep giving Hexus my details and waiting for the "congratulations you have won..." email but it never seems to arrive.
Re: Getting spammed via my Hexus signup email
I get the same problem Spreadie, and with the same reason for being suspicious.
Not had any from Hexus mind you, but other sites that have given no obvious information about breaches.
There are always a few theories:
1 Data breach, someone somewhere has obtained the email address from the original source
2 Data interception, someone could be slurping addresses as they pass around the internet
3 Mailbox monitoring, could happen as someone gets the data as you download mail
4 Mailbox access, someone has a way of accessing your mailbox and getting addresses
5 Malware, you have something you arent aware of
1 always seems most likely
2 might happen at the senders end too, but id not really expect it
3 - 5 seem less likely because why would you only get spam to 1 address? if they slurped lots, you'd find them all on a spammers list surely?
