block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last post.
I've mentioned it a few times. It just happened again here: https://forums.hexus.net/storage/413...ml#post4254115
A pointless resurrection by a new poster trying to get up to 20 posts by the looks of it.
If there isn't a desire to auto lock threads could we add to the permission privileges the inability to post in dormant threads more than 6 months after their last post until someone has got to 50 meaningful posts?
Even 25 would help weed out the scan count wannabes.

Re: block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last pos
Ah, I completely forgot about the Scan links - I just thought we had a bunch of weird noobies who like spamming dead threads.

Re: block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last pos
I have to agree, welcoming new members is one thing but you can clearly see the people who are trying to get the post count to 20 etc.
I mean some of the threads replied to are so old I am not surprised the original question asked was "Can anyone recommend a good VHS player, preferably Nicam"

Re: block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last pos
This happening is not that surprising when the thread was only the ninth one down from the top in that forum section. I'm not so sure it is people signing up just for free scan delivery.
-
Re: block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last pos
Yes it is, it always is, don't you find it funny that they get to 20 posts then stop posting??
-
Re: block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last pos
Assuming it still is the case you don't have to even post anything to get the same benefit at AV forums. I always figured it was a Hexus stipulation rather than a scan one, to try and get people to invest themselves in the forum.

Re: block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last pos
Dont think there is free scan postage at av forums?
I know there used to and it was a min order of £50 as well but haven't seen any mention of free shipping on there for a long time.

As I remember it, the boot was only the other foot, though. It wasn't to get people involved in the forum. It was supposed to be a benefit, a bit of a perk, for those that already were. Hence, setting some qualifying criteria.
But it certainly has been the case that a LOT of people sign up, make 20 quick and often trivial posts, get free delivery and then stop. Which was why the rules were changed to active members, and meaningful posts. Unfortunately, both terms are highly subjective.

Re: block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last pos
All I can say is that the post highlighted above was not meaningful, helpful or relevant anymore given it was so long ago that machine is now long since built and already requisitioned by Mrs ik9000. I could find several more examples along similar lines but they've already wasted my time enough I'm loathe to have to do so.

credit where it's due this person gets it - not all new posters are dunces. And look, posted in a thread not even two days old! https://forums.hexus.net/displays-mo...ml#post4255732

Top tip!
Post something controversial about Brexit...Or maybe London. The thread will soon be locked.
(Apologies Mods. I wouldn't want to do your job for money, let alone for free. Provided admin for a forum once. Won't be doing that again.)

Re: block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last pos
folks, I don't know if the curtailed lists in subforums is in response to this but I'm not sure it's the right way to go about it. Eg the Home and DIY forum is only showing 2 threads. The answer is not to prevent people seeing old threads - there is some good stuff in there (and across the wider fora). I was trying to find the one I started about plumbing query to continue it but can't now see it.
The issue is new posters. Stop them responding to old threads. Preventing anyone from seeing the thread titles is not a fix, it just makes it look like the forum has no real content/userbase and hampers longer standing members from finding and continuing threads with legitimate and relevent content.

Re: block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last pos
All the posts are still there, if you look down the bottom you will see it says Thread Display Options, its set to the last 75 days, change that to whatever you want and you will see the posts

Thanks I hadn't seen that. I do still worry it makes the forum look like a backwater of non-use to the casual browser.

Re: block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last pos
I have thought that myself in other parts of the forum hence how I know that was there as I did wonder before why the forum said 5000 replies or something and there was only 1 post in it

2 years 6 months out of date, but why let that stop you posting an irrelevant opinion when there's a thread necro opportunity to be had? (and soon to be spam links once they hit 5 posts no doubt)

(it's a giveaway when peterb has been posting in the thread!)

Re: block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last pos
Morning, what you have to remember is that Mods and Admins all have real lives :) We cannot be here 24/7 but we do pickup these when we log in. The one you mentioned had multiple entries at SFS (a forum spam tool we use) and has been banned :)

Why post about it though? Just hit the report button, then your follow-up post won't look as silly when the necro-poster has been removed. :P

This is the sort of tedious task that you want a computer to do for you though, you shouldn't have to involve people in it.
Not as good as this suggestion, but looks like there might be a forum addon that could help. It would make people do more work to necro a thread and should stop new users posting through ignorance.

or we could implement a system which prevents them necro'ing threads and then noone has to report them, and the mods don't have to spend time looking into posts and manually removing them?
If we don't highlight the problem it won't get prioritised for an improvement.

Reporting it is highlighting it.

not in a way where we (non mods) can see the frequency of the issue. If it's like other aspects of life things only get prioritised when someone makes enough of a fuss and can back it up with actual stats and evidence. So each time I get hacked off I put it in here. You don't have to read this thread if you don't want to.
FWITW I do report the posts too. But the people who deal with that are not the ones who can deal with the coding and block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last post or similar, so there is a point to this.

Re: block new users from resurrecting threads more than 6 months after their last pos
OK fyi, every day when all admin and mods log on, we check the Moderation queue. This is a queue of posts by (usually) new members who have not been recognised as pukka yet by the mysterious HEXUS AI. We often go thru 30-40 posts checking on content and date of OP if doing a reply. A lot of these get banned immediately, and you lot never even see it :)
Our preferred method for you guys to help us out is simply to report the post, adding a small comment as to why you are reporting. Necro, PCP (post count pimping), drivel, spam sales, etc. The then all fall to our beautiful ban hammer if warranted.

but just imagine if that pile of posts could be reduced before you even had to do anything? wouldn't that be an improvement?

another necro'd thread. You know it's old when the last post before today was the legendary Peterb https://forums.hexus.net/hexus-news/...lay-music.html
